Zodiac Death Machine is pretty impressive to watch.

Sounds like a good band name.

In the Z408, Zodiac makes reference to killing being "better than getting your rocks off with a girl."

That suggests that Zodiac had intimate relations with a female.

I think it suggests the opposite. For him to include that line makes me think he was trying to brag about himself, as usual. His bragging usually comes across as overstating or flat out lying. It reminds me of the Bates letter, when he talks about how her breast felt. Why include that unless you’d been wanting to touch her for a long time or to show you finally did regardless of her wishes? The only thing I can think of is he was bragging that he finally touched one. That would negate his rocks off comment, if I’m correct. Pair that with him almost always attacking couples, he clearly had an issue with women. If I had to guess, he said it so police wouldn’t look for a loner that was bad with women. He was hoping they’d believe he was with women and the exact opposite of what he actually was. Almost everything he wrote was to control the narrative and direct police in the wrong direction. I feel this is likely another example of that.

Years ago, I read a report related to Zodiac’s possible ‘latent homosexuality’ a written about by Paul Avery. There was a quote that stuck with me which read something like ‘A heterosexual male wouldn’t need to write "with a girl" they would write just "getting your rocks off". The part about "with a girl" is an oversell, like the writer is reassuring himself he’s straight. That being said, I don’t know if Ross has any gay tendencies or any girlfriends, but I do recall AllenS, (the guy that came forward with all the info about Ross) saying that Ross had a crush on a girl

Isn’t he the guy who had an encounter with an angry Ross over that girl?

I can see that train of thought, but he comes across as a frustrated dude that likes women and can’t understand or interact with them in a way that would lead to a relationship. Also, I’d think the guys would be the ones being killed and the girls living if that were the case. He was always so fixated on writing about and killing the women. I still think “getting your rocks off with a girl” should be taken as one big lie vs half of it being the focus.

One key component is how popular was that phrase during the late 60s?

People don’t use it now, so it sounds like an odd thing to say. Or something with significance. But if it was a commonly used phrase back then….then it doesn’t necessarily have much significance, imo.

If you said "ok boomer" and used "like" in every sentence you spoke, and talked about how "woke" you were….in 1968, people would talk about what an odd dude you were. But now, that’s how most teenagers talk.

Groovy was used back in the day. Not so much anymore.

Ngram Viewer traces it back to the mid-1950s. https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?c … ff%3B%2Cc0

It keeps peaking into the mid-60s, then obviously spikes after Zodiac uses it.

It would help if people knew which post you were replying to.

The actual phrase doesn’t mean as much as the intent behind it imo. He said it for effect. Look at me, I’ve gotten my rocks off with a girl, I’ve gone parking with a girl, I’ve been in the backseat with a girl, etc. I don’t think he had and that’s why he made such a statement.

The idea that Zodiac couldn’t get dates deserves skepticism. He was apparently a good looking man, if the Beryessa co-eds are to be believed. Looking at some of the maybe-Z cases, he might have had a very good ability to get women to come along with him.

Ted Bundy was successful with women and he committed some of the most depraved and evil crimes imaginable.
