I think she’s a mental health professional now. She specializes in children from abusive families and/or alcohol-drug related backgrounds. Perhaps that was the connection. Although she was likely a student at the time, maybe she was helping Ross in some way back then.

So while others might have shunned him for being so weird, she likely found him interesting and sought to help him. They were all hippies remember. Maybe she felt sorry for him and let him rent a room from her because he hated living in the Y.

Or maybe dealing with Ross inspired her to go into that line of work.
