The Mikado book came from this business before it was at RCC – a stamp inside reveals exactly as typed below:
Bertrand Smith
Acres of Books
240 Long Beach Blvd
Long Beach, Calif.

Unfortunately I’m still trying to resize the pic of the stamp. At least I was able to slap some pictures up earlier.
Good research hope you find some gems. I hope you can find those school newspapers from the 6os

Me too! Can’t wait to get the card and login key to get searching. Defo is next order of business.

Take a look at the RCC copy of "Codes and Ciphers." It contains the Zodiac Alphabet and might have been there the same time Ross was.

How funny I was actually going to check out that stack and decided to call it a day bc what a task it will be! Definitely will check out that specific book for you and will check the surrounding books. Thank you!

Yeah, wow, this is really exciting! Thank for doing this, Pink. I was just going to say books on cryptography.
Also:
1. The librarian said that Ross wrote a term paper about different handwriting styles for his English class. Back in those days, library books were about all students had for school research. Look for books that discuss different handwriting styles. Ross may have checked them out. If we can verify that he checked out one of those books, it would be an amazing find.
2. The librarian said that Ross wrote a poem for "one of the school publications that was hardly inspiring." Ask the librarian about old school publications that covered student writing. Some schools used to publish little books that had essays and poems in them written by the students. It could have been a school newspaper, or another school publication. If we can find that poem, it would be very interesting.
3. The librarian also said that Ross would "work and hour or so a day lettering the books with white ink or an electric stylus. He would have lettered them EXACTLY as required." Those would have been the new incoming books. Probably the books with the darker covers had white ink, and the lighter covers had a darker ink. I just want to know if this is true for the books that were new when Ross worked there. I want to know what some of the lettering looks like, if possible. The Dewey Decimal system used lettering and numbers. I would put this below number 1 and 2 in priority for now, because you could probably spend days looking at books spines and never know who marked them. I just want to know if what the librarian said is true for now. If there is white ink on the book spines.
Paul A:
I did not know that the book Codes and Ciphers published in 1964 included a copy of the Zodiac alphabet. Do you mean the symbols that Zodiac used with his coded messages? Would you have a copy to show me?
Thanks so much, Smokie.
Hey morf,
Do you think that there should be a special thread for the RCC library?
Smokie

The book "Codes and Ciphers" was talked about in the Yellow Book. It came out in 1964 and explains how basic ciphers work. This book also talks about ancient alphabets and includes this page on the Zodiac Alphabet.
(*The 408 code from Z used similar symbols for R and T)
PRO: Ross worked for a man named Harold Prue, who had some connection to Ham Radio. If Ross was into Ham Radio, he would have to learn the basics of ciphers.
Paul A, thanks. I read the Yellow Book over 20 years ago and afterwards gave my copy to a friend. Sometimes I forget stuff. Thanks again!

Not sure, what do you guys think? If so, should it be in the Cheri Jo Bates section?

It’s been a while since I have been in a library, can you see the people’s names who previously checked out a book? If so, I would love to know who previously read those code books in RCC

Oh gosh I wish the books showed who checked them out, but unfortunately they only have stamps for the dates due (and turned in?).

Still, would be interesting to see how popular they were in 65-67

Defo will take note of the dates and take a picture of the card (among other things) when I go back. Thanks for the reminder.
