Beacon Lighting … Lighting the Eye of Diablo … has memorialized Pearl Harbor Day by turning on the summit beacon atop Mount Diablo.Since 1964, the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association has memorialized Pearl Harbor Day by turning on the summit beacon atop Mount Diablo. The “Eye of Diablo” as it’s known, was extinguished in 1941 just after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The beacon is lit at sunset and shines all night on this single evening each year. The event begins at sunset and the public is invited to attend.

The “Eye” crowned Standard Oil’s Standard Diablo (SD) tower, erected in 1928 to aid in the expansion of commercial aviation, and was transferred to Mount Diablo’s Summit Building after it was completed in 1942. Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz, Commander in Chief of Pacific Forces during World War II, relit the beacon in 1964 for the first time and suggested it be lit every December 7th to honor those who served and sacrificed.

Former state park ranger Burt Bogardus, a recipient of Save Mount Diablo’s 2005 Mountain Star award, is one of the few who know how to run the beacon. After the historic aircraft beacon’s aging electronics proved unreliable, Burt designed and built a remote control unit which is used for the annual December 7th event.

Thought I’d share the MT. Diablo Web Cam. This is pretty cool to click on during different weather conditions.

All of us ponder, "Mt Diablo’s Lore" to the Zodiac
There’s a lot of history & old pioneer names on the Mt.
We all have thought about Mt.Diablo meaning Devil Mountain.
Myself I think about, "The Beacon" The EYE of Mt. Diablo.
Jackass Canyon, is a remote canyon on the Mountain.
Also a few pine areas, Coulter Trail & Knobcone Point Rd.
Arroyo Del Cerro is just one of the water names.
And this one is interesting, The Emmett Wilbur Zippe Trail.

Ricardo, Sandy & myself went to Mt. Diablo to honor "Pearl Harbor Day" and the lighting of the Beacon.
It was a cold, hazy day. Normally on a clear day one can see forever.

Cool pics, Zam.

I think it’s interesting to consider WHY Zodiac selected Mt. Diablo as his personal axis mundi or at least chose to utilize it as a center point for his directions on where to find his bomb.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axis_mundi

He could have chosen anywhere in the Bay Area as a reference point but chose a mountain with a nefarious, "diabolical" name, which overlooks the entire Bay area and just so happens to have a really nifty benchmark resembling his own personally chosen symbol at the summit. I honestly think that Mt. Diablo held some real psychological significance for Z and that he very likely visited the Mt. Diablo benchmark, enjoying the sense of power he imagined looking down on "his territory".

The benchmark actually closely resembles Zodiac’s map representation of Mt. Diablo in his Bus Bomb map:

I also think it’s interesting to note that both Mt. Diablo and Mt. Tamalpais both held deep significance in American Indian folklore and the SF counterculture (Beat generation) also adopted Mt. Tam as a sacred, spiritual location. The cover of the final edition of the underground newspaper, The San Francisco Oracle, in 1968, for instance, is a representation of the sleeping maiden legend of Mt. Tam (which looks vaguely like a prone woman in profile) and a number of beat poems were written on the subject of Mt. Tam.

Z, for whatever reason, chose instead the mountain with the more sinister name and suspect representation, which I have to imagine fit his own self-image at the time.

http://cowellhistoricalsociety.org/html/devil.html

All speculation, of course, but I think it’s worth considering why Z focused on this single location in designing his scavenger hunt for his real or imagined bus bomb.

I do think all of that IS interesting entropy, but considering Zodiac was trying to pinpoint a location, it makes sense he would use Mt. Diablo as a starting point.

"Ever wonder how your property corners were initially established? Just look to the top of Mount Diablo for the answer.

Mount Diablo is the starting point for the establishment of land boundaries throughout most of Northern California and all of Nevada. The summit is the location of the "Initial Point," the north/south meridian, and east/west baseline intersection point that is the basis for most property boundaries…."

..continued: http://www.mtdiablocam.com/mtdiablomaps.htm

***

–When we consider his use of "feet to the west", etc., it makes me think Zodiac was quite familiar with Mt. Diablo and one of it’s major uses.

North/south meridian….east/west baseline. Sounds like his cross-circle symbol. ;)

…they may be dealing with one or more ersatz Zodiacs–other psychotics eager to get into the act, or perhaps even other murderers eager to lay their crimes at the real Zodiac’s doorstep. L.A. Times, 1969

Excellent point, tahoe. Mt. Diablo is a significant geographical landmark in itself so it kind of makes sense as a center point for his map and could indicate that Z had some familiarity with surveying or related professions. It’s sort of an axis mundi for all of Northern California so I suppose there doesn’t really need to be any special psychological significance to Z’s choice of center points.

Thanks for posting that Zam.

A little zync in the pic as I’m sure most will spot it. On a serious note though I hope that families in that area and the firefighters tackling it will be safe.

The zync – partial batwing logo or just a Z perhaps.

I have to add one of the photos from that link Zam. Terrifying, looks like an atom bomb blast.

And the thankyou text from the page as it pertains to Morgan Territory Road. That’s mentioned in some of the map theory threads I think.

Thanks to all the Claycordians who have sent us night photos of the unbelievable scene on Morgan Territory Road, Mt. Diablo, and the surrounding area.

Great pictures Zam ! I saw the start of this fire about 1:30 pm when I drove to the store. One woman said it started close to where she was and said another one was starting just up the road from the first one. No one has said how this fire started ?

Morf’s suspect lives on that road !
