There is this Fairfield letter…

http://zodiackillertruth.com/killacop.htm

of which I actually do believe that it is authentic (mainly due to handwriting, wording, cipher and symbol drawing style).

Now I just wondered about the cipher: First appears to be a 12-letter word with

– a double letter on pos 6 & 7
– same letter on pos 10 as well
– equal letters on position 5 & 12.

The following words appear to have a length of 4, 2, 1, 2, 3 letters only, which might still be possible. However it seems to be a fact that there actually exists NO sinlge word with the criteria mentioned above (I compared an overall of 11,355 words with length=12). So we somehow should conclude that there either is an error in the cipher or the word is not a common word but rather a name, e.g. of a victim or a city.

Quicktrader-

Have you compared this "cipher" against the 340? Because you should. It is nothing more than copied bits from it.

The Fairfield letter was approved of by the FBI. I’m still shaking my head about that.

Actually I did…and it’s not the same. The first four letters are identical, the rest is rather mixed. It seems to be a cipher for itself, and it could help to solve the 340, too.

Does it have to start with a 12-letter word? Can’t it start with something like "my thing is good times"? I used the yuengling method for that.

Been looking for…but there was no appropriate 12-letter-word matching this cipher. So it should either start with a sentence or even a name, place etc..however: when looking at the cipher again, the 6th letter could be even a square while the 7th letter might be a circle. This meaning only (!) two letters repeating, on position 7 and 10. All others, assuming a monoalphabetic chiffre, not being allowed to repeat.

Therefore

BLUEPRINTING would not be possible, as letter I and N is showing up twice.
COPUBLISHING however would work, as only the letter I is repeating on position 7 and 10.

Selecting 11,355 words with 12 letters on these criteria, only 17 (!) remain which could mean a start of solving the cipher.

COPUBLISHING
LOCKSMITHING
OBJECTIFYING
OUTACHIEVING
OVERBUILDING
PREACHIFYING
PREMODIFYING
REDUCTIONISM
REPUBLISHING
REQUALIFYING
ADJOURNMENTS
OVERHUNTINGS
ROPEDANCINGS
BACHELORDOMS
LARYNGOSCOPE
LACQUERWORKS
EXORBITANTLY

This leads us to the letter I, N, O, R or T represented by the circle symbol. However there still is the possibility that Z had used multiple homophones, allowing all other possibilities again, if he had used the same chiffre as in the 340..disappointing.

One thing is strange…in the Fairfield letter, the author used sort of OAIKH+ while in the 340 Z had used ODAIKH+…so it is almost the same, but only almost..two different symbols between the O and the I in the 340..

But then again: Although similar, the second last symbol is NOT present in the 340…

It looks like 6 is a square and 7 a circle to me.

A possible solution of the cipher could be something like…

REPUBLISHING TEXT SO I LL HIT U AT 9 ON 1.2. ZODIAC

which however whould be incoherent with a simple homophonic substitution cipher. Well.

We do know that there was a call on 1-2-1970, when Z called at the Sacramento office of the FBI:

‘This is Zodiac. I just killed (inaudible)’. The call occurred at 1:59 pm at the FBI’s Sacramento office switchboard. The voice on the line trails off at the end of the statement. This was similar to the LB call where the caller says he killed someone and then his voice diminishes at the end of his statement. The operator who took the call said that after the word "killed", the caller’s "voice began to soften until it faded away entirely. Then he hung up." (source?)

Admittedly, I have no clue what I’m doing, but I came up with….

my thing is good times assailing in gun gloves.

Probably a lot of possible solutions to this one, especially if I can come up with something semi-coherent.
