Here is my view over the 3 letters written between 1978 to 1987; there is no doubt the author in all these three which spawned over 9 years is the same person, who is obsessed with Herb Caen for some reason.

The big question is: Do you believe he took his mentally illed hobby of admiring and pretending to be the authentic zodiac and went on to killing innocents (the Laotian couple Koy Ien Saechao, 48 years old, and Choy Fow Salee, 40 years old, who were murdered on April 22nd, 1986, whom he hinted to have killed by his May 6th, 1986 letter) in the real life?

These look very much alike to me and I wouldn’t doubt one bit if they were written by the same person.

It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if some of these copy-cats (in any cases like this) are very much capable of murder–pawn it off on someone else, but I also have no doubt some if these people were just jack-holes who got-off doing this twisted stuff, minus killing people.

…they may be dealing with one or more ersatz Zodiacs–other psychotics eager to get into the act, or perhaps even other murderers eager to lay their crimes at the real Zodiac’s doorstep. L.A. Times, 1969

One of the reasons this really looks like a copy-cat is this: The writer, like Z, crosses out a word and then uses a different word.

However, I can’t figure out what word starts with "bu" that could follow "I am…" In other words, I think the crossed-out "bu" was wholly intentional, and not the writer changing word selection in mid sentence, as Z sometimes seemed to do.

Can anyone suggest what word would’ve been appropriate in that sentence, beginning with "bu"?

My suggestion: "I am bullet proof and better "

In the ‘Los Angeles’ letter mailed on March 13th 1971 the Zodiac used the similar wording "crack proof".

"This is the Zodiac speaking Like I have allways said, I am crack proof. If the Blue Meannies are evere going to catch me, they had best get off their fat asses + do something. Because the longer they fiddle + fart around, the more slaves I will collect for my after life. I do have to give them credit for stumbling across my riverside activity, but they are only finding the easy ones, there are a hell of a lot more down there. The reason I’m writing to the Times is this, They don’t bury me on the back pages like some of the others".

Hi, english is not my first language so please bear with me :)

Thanks, yes, "Bullet-proof" would make sense.

It’s a lot more likely than "butter" or "butthead"….. :D
