Something I remembered watching when I was a cid that amazed me. I just watched this a half a dozen times already and it amazes me even more today.

Truly brilliant for someone who supposedly didn’t read or write music notes.

Enjoy

Harpo Marx – Harp Playing (1945)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PYJgG1zZ_M

I was entranced. Harpo was quite a talent. I didn’t know I liked the harp, but it was amazing.

That said, I hope I won’t be taking lessons anytime soon.

Regards,

G

I don’t usually use such language, but there was indeed some point at which I realized Harpo’s piece bordered on the sublime.

You are right to compare it to a Ferrari or a beautiful painting, though I would beware a painting that captures my soul. (That happened to another youngish-looking DG, so do take care.)

As for being caught on a desert island, I happened across a very appealing desert island that looks to be surrounded by an ocean of silence (which, to aging introvert like myself, is the most sublime sound of all). And look at the address:

P.s: I was at one time very good looking. Probably as good lookging as a young Dorian Gray. There is no escape from TIME…please forgive my fowardness, its but a DREAM for Em now.

DG9

A fugue is a dream state where time has lost all control over us. Which reminds me of something I memorized bits of eons ago:

Fugue and Lapsus

In the loft of angels
‘Pon softest wings
I wept to the dulcimers’ tune
And slept on laps where down must fall
In dreams ‘neath a goose-summers’ moon

I dreamt of waking
And lost to fear
Awoke! To softless, unsoothing things
Burning for Angels fallen down
And the lapse your memory brings

Main reason I think of this is the title. It was where I learned both words. My musical knowledge is minimal (like Harpo, I guess, but minus the talent), but I understand it is also a musical word. I don’t know the precise meaning in the musical context, but for me it calls to mind Bach’s D Minor Concerto, which affects me profoundly. I first heard it while I was sleeping and suddenly awoke, but in a strange state, to softless, unsoothing things, so to speak, my heart was pounding, I had been racing along behind a fox as it zigged and zagged endlessly through tall grass that was being whipped to and fro by the wind. I couldn’t sleep and I couldn’t completely wake for what must have been ages. Anyway, that was for me a disturbing and exciting fugue.

Then, a bit later, I stopped doing shrooms and the fugue dreams never came back. :)

I never heard of a dulcimer and I listened to it last night on you tube. It has a banjo type twang and it didn’t rise to the level of sublime that I was describing before. I believe the person playing the instrument and their natural ability (a phenom) has a lot to do of reaching that level.

Which instrument did you hear in your dream?

Check this out: Robert Tiso playing Bach’s D minor concerto with a glass harp.

Hi DG9,

Ha, ha! It never occurred to me to wonder what a dulcimer sounds (or looks) like. I always imagined it to be something very soothing, as suggested by the name. Following your sufggestion, I checked on Youtube and came across some mountain dulcimers played in some of the Appalachian states. You are right, they have a twangy, banjo sound. I hope the poet didn’t have those in mind. As I looked a bit further, though, it seems there are a number of things called a dulcimer, and they stretch back to Biblical times. There was one version played with a bow. And one the Smithsonian site, they mentioned that the dulcimer was probably an inspiration for the pianoforte.

This is where I admit that I learned that poem in hopes of impressing a girl in my youth (rhyme with lute). Turns out I slected the wrong author–she was into Hermann Hesse–but she fell for it. But only briefly. She dumped me about three weeks later. Such is life. I had the cute that rhynes with youth, but I was never a DG.

As for the glass harp version of the D Minor concerto, that was very beautiful. The version that Caught me in a dream state was on piano.

Take care,

G

To me the phrase "Mumbo Jumbo" has always been used to mean that something appears to be nonsense. The origins of the phrase, that you have found, allude to this but in modern context it means nonsense or gibberish.
