It appears from his correspondence and other indicia that Zodiac observed anniversaries and other key dates. Assuming that Z is alive and in fairly good health, what are the chances he visits some of the sites as we approach 50th anniversaries? Would it be likely that he would use these events as an excuse to come out of hiding one last time with some taunting letters?
My own thoughts are: yes, to the first and maybe, to the second. He would only send letters if he were absolutely convinced that he wasn’t leaving evidence that could be detected forensically. Or, potentially, he may not care about prviding evidence. It would be sort of a swan song. I think his ego would not handle well the thought of dying anonymously
New correspondence would likely carry fresh DNA that would sprint through forensics to make an arrest ASAP. A microscopic shred of skin or hair would be enough. Zodiac is likely smart enough to know this. It’s possible he would like to unmask himself, but on his own terms, not in handcuffs.
Z hasn’t sent any letters in four decades, so it seems unlikely he would start now, but who knows? He could be getting nostalgic, or he might decide he hasn’t got much time left, so why not have a cheap thrill.
However it happens, I’d be thrilled if he was identified while he was still alive and could be brought to justice and to answer some questions.
Zodiac was a screwup. He left behind five breathing victims, two survivors, bootprints, possibly fingerprints and palmprints, tiretracks, eyewitnesses, and earwitnesses. If the APB had gone out for a WMA he would have been locked up in ’69.
Don’t see it happening. Movies, books, and TV shows have came and gone without any communications. If he is still alive and I believe so he would find it over the top risky. This tells me he is surrounded by family and has left the Bay Area.
Z’s moving north makes sense. If you consider Cheri bates as his 1st victim as I do, the progression from south to north is consistent, By now, he could be out of California: Oregon, say, or Washington.

I agree it would be great if he was caught while still alive.
As far as not writing for decades, we don’t know for sure if he has written or not?
The Eureka card was in 1990 and stuffed in a drawer, because someone didn’t think it was from the Zodiac?
How many other letters were received that we don’t know about?
How many phone calls from Zodiac to the police telling them where he has dumped bodies? I know of one call in the 1990’s that was thought to be just a hoax. Yet the caller told the truth as to where Andrea Ingersol’s body was in Pittsburg Ca. I believe that he is alive, still killing and writes from time to time, we just don’t hear about it.
How about the Z like threat on a bathroom wall at Diablo Valley Collage last Dec 12th 2018? Can we say for sure that was not him letting us know he is still around? That was 8 days before the Lake Herman 50th anniversary.
