For POI study.

Can someone from the area tell me about American Canyon. Is it a city? I think it was once called Napa Junction. What was it like in the late 60s?

Thanks in advance.

American Canyon in the ’60’s was located in Napa County very near the Solano County line. The residents of American Canyon, for the most part, had Vallejo phone numbers and addresses though. The main housing subdivision was called Rancho Del Mar but there were other homes there, too. There was an elementary school called Donaldson Way. Most of the kids went to school in Vallejo for junior high and high school because the Vallejo schools were closer but some did go to school in Napa. It is also where the Napa County Dumps were located, now it’s a waste disposal transfer station.

American Canyon had a few small businesses, restaurants, convenience store, nursery, bowling alley, gas stations and a couple of bars as well as some construction type stuff and a auto wrecking yard.

I believe that Napa Junction was a separate community and it’s naming had something to do with the railroad but I could be wrong about that. I do recall that Napa Junction was a little further north on Highway 29 than American Canyon.

I read the Vallejo speedway was there then too.

Thanks so much, Seagull and Tahoe. My potential poi had two phone listings with 707 area codes and stated the numbers were in American Canyon. Good to see they had schools there as I think he was a custodian or some other type worker for the school system.

The Vallejo Speedway was in Solano County but the north end very near American Canyon.

Yes…3750 Broadway.

The guys at the site mentioned American Canyon Rd. where the mobile home parks are now, but it was Northeastern Vallejo. You’re correct Seagull.

James Owen was associated with a Trailer park in American Canyon. I think he lived there when he 1st moved to the Vallejo area circa 1968
