I read somewhere recently that the Zodiac Killer was observed smoking? did I get that right? Either someone smokes cigarettes or they don’t.
This could include or exclude certain suspects…

Was it the unknown man at Lake Berryessa, who may or may not have been Z?

I seem to recall something about cigarette butts being found where he was seen or perhaps I’m making that up? Anyone?

Your answers are there.

…they may be dealing with one or more ersatz Zodiacs–other psychotics eager to get into the act, or perhaps even other murderers eager to lay their crimes at the real Zodiac’s doorstep. L.A. Times, 1969

I respectfully disagree with you. Even if Zodiac left those cigarette butts, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he was a regular smoker. Could be that he smoked only when he was Z, but in his "normal life" he abstained. I know people who smoke only when drinking, others during particularly stressful events, others only on cold mornings with a good cup of joe, etc. I, for example, only smoked in college, and often that would be on nights of study cram sessions…or during a party. :)

The standard, I guess, is for someone to get hooked and transform into a person who’s constantly attached to the end of a cancer stick. But it’s a vice that many also lean on only on certain occasions, so I personally wouldn’t use the habit to include or exclude any suspects.

I once asked someone who had talked to Kathleen Johns if the man that drove her around smoked. The answer was no. Two hours is a long time for a smoker not to smoke. Of course, we can’t confirm that the man was Zodiac. Much like we can’t confirm that the man the girls at LB saw was Zodiac. Soooooooo…. don’t know.

He could have been a casual smoker. My father was one of those, he would have a pack of cigarettes that would last him a month or 2. He might only smoke to calm his nerves.
