We do not know who they were extorting. That is what we must work on finding out. All the violence associated with Zodiac could have been public examples of the Zodiacs abilities to carry out threats of violence during an extortion attempt. The Zodiac was scaring the public very much. Perhaps they were contacting vulnerable people and threatened them personally if they didn’t give them cash.
Some of what Zodiac did could be thought of as a type of extortion, shakedown, blackmail etc. When Zodiac would demand front page news and told them to publish what he wanted or else he would kill more people, that is extortion right?
Who knows if Darlene told the man who was about to kill her, if he didn’t leave her alone she would tell the police what she saw him do in the Virgin Islands. Did she know there were other people in that group who would kill her if she did go to the police and that is why she didn’t?
Why did she think she would be in the newspaper? She said that to her mother,shortly before she was killed. Was she finally fed up with being watched / followed/ phoned and was about to tell the police what she knew about the group? What ever it was ,was newsworthy! IF that personal ad is legit, I think it points towards Manalli being the "partner." And that makes perfect sense. His handwriting and other things make him a good candidate for being Zodiac’s partner. My personal opinion is that he did none of the killing but later did the Santa Rosa killings. I have wondered if Manalli’s accident was not actually an accident and maybe there was foul play involved.

Initially my idea behind the post was merely what has happened to zodiac. The thought behind this was inevitably zodiac would be get shot by one of his potential victims. It makes sense that this would be his fate if he continued his reckless fits of rage. However now in 1976 classified ad has been alluded to. One way or another I believe this zodiac group had infighting. That is typical of group criminal activities. Somebody gets reckless and puts the operation in jeopardy. They become loose cannons and they have to go.
Its looking more and more like a criminal drug ring creating a reign of fear. The culprits wielded the whole Zodiac persona like the sword of Damocles over the people they dealt with in that area they operated in selling dope.
The more I think about it the more this rings out of organized crime. This was a big caper orchestrated by serious people. This something to do with narcotics here you mark my words. Drug rings are ruthless and they go to any lengths to silence any loose lips.
