It was this part of Bryan Hartnell’s interview that makes me think that Zodiac got a hair cut between the attack at Lake Berryessa and the shooting in San Francisco.

I feel like a man suddenly shaving his hair down to crew cut length would have a really hard time explaining why he did to his peers/relatives. I don’t rule it out though. There was also a wig shop near Mason & Geary St too.

A person with longer hair, whose hair is brushed/slicked back, could appear to have a shorter hair cut when viewed from the front. someone with a short crew cut, could not have hair hanging out of his eye hole slits by his glasses. I have longer hair, and it tends to sit under my flannel shirts, if you didn’t know me, you would be missing the 6-8 inches of hair going down my back.

In that case, you are suggesting he didn’t intend to kill them. You’re also suggesting he thought his hood didn’t conceal his hair.

I would argue against both of those assumptions.

There was always the possibility that Bryan and Cecelia could have taken off running and Z would have
had to abort the attack.

As far as the wig goes (IF there was a wig and that’s a big IF) I was just thinking that Z MAY have constructed
the hood that way because that was the only way he could secure the hood in place so it doesn’t move
around on his head and obstruct his vision. (just a possibility that could explain why he wasn’t sporting a
crew cut at LB)

I have to agree with this. I don’t rule out the possibility, but seems a bad idea.

I’ve tried to look up crew cut wigs, or more specifically a ‘flat top’ wig, and it’s hard to find a decent example. The hair has to be woven into a net, so if the hair is too short, then the net hairnet would be visible. With a flat top-style the hair has to be gelled to stand up, further revealing the weave-base. Furthermore, if you have a lot of hair underneath the wig, it’s not going to sit right. They only really work if you’re bald.

Now I’m not saying you can’t get shot hair wigs, a wig can be cut to any length. But anyone attempting to disguise themselves would need the wig to be plausible and non-ridiculous, so as not to be conspicuous. Otherwise, his appearance would imprint on people. People are quite good at detecting even expensive toupees, which is likely why they are out of fashion these days.

Given that Zodiac constructs a rather transparent and child-like lie, about wearing a disguise, tends to make me that believe he didn’t.

I seem to recall a report that Cecelia essentially/briefly seen him without the hood, he had stopped to don the hood behind the tree before coming down the hill where they were laying on a blanket. He had to put on the hood, and then the glasses. I’m assuming he was already wearing the glasses, took them off, put the hood on quickly, and secured the hood to his face with the glasses, I think he might of had something a little longer than a crew cut to say the least. Maybe he got a haircut before Stine at PH, or maybe his hair was simply better groomed that day. Lots of good composite matches out there.
