On page 51 of the December 1967 issue of Popular Science, in an article written by Erle Stanley Gardner (creator of Perry Mason) about new police anti-riot technology, the following appears:
I like it.

I think Faraday physically fought with the Zodiac because Faraday realized Jensen was the focus of the Zodiac’s attention. There is some evidence of him being struck before being shot at point blank. So I am guessing it is around this time that Faraday told her to run. The next time the Zodiac would make sure the males were dealt with first.
Lord have mercy.

‘[David] had been shot in the upper portion of the left ear by a small caliber bullet which penetrated the ear and head. There appeared to be powder burns on the left ear where the bullet had entered. There was a large lump on his right cheek and the hair on his left side was matted with blood.’ He also ‘held a class ring by the tips of his ring and middle fingers of his left hand‘
Clearly David was readying himself to get at the guy.
That was too much!

My take on this is that David was trying to hang onto his property which probably would have ended up on a serial killer’s souvenir shrine and joined up later with Paul Stine’s wallet.

@bdholland I’d also suggest the possibility that Zodiac used robbery as a ruse to get the two to comply. David may have been preparing to hand over the ring as instructed before he was shot in cold blood.

Something likely changed in terms of MO between LHR and BRS. Perhaps Zodiac attempted a different form of control with Mageau and Ferrin, emulating LE stop tactics because he wanted more compliance.

I agree, and I think what precipitated that was Betty Lou running away. That probably spooked him, and at BRS, he never gave either Mike nor Darlene any chance to escape.

Yeah, that is on the cards also.
Cheri Jo Bates had been beaten about and I remember reading about facial contusions. When I read about the lump on the side of Faraday’s face it reminded me that CJB had been struck but unless we read the autopsy report we won’t know.
The reason why I suggested Faraday intervened to save Jensen is that this has some explanatory power over a crime during the EARONS case called the Maggiores. It seems a couple out walking their dog stumbled upon DeAngelo doing some stalking. He probably ordered them by gunpoint into an empty garden and the male Brian likely engaged DeAngelo so that Katie could make a run for it. Shoelaces were found on the ground suggesting DeAngelo was getting them out to tie them up. So maybe at that point Brian tried to get the drop on him.
Brian was shot and killed. Katie made it through several gardens, tripped on a flowerbed and DeAngelo caught up with her and shot her in cold blood before leaping a fence, getting seen, and running off. The composite was the one featured in the modern FBI wanted poster.
So whenever I come across a dead male and dead female a distance away who was running I tend to think the male tried to stop what was happening, lost and that is why the female made it so far and he didn’t.

@bdholland Morf has always expressed the advice he was given “Focus on the canoncial crimes first, and the possible crimes second.” I’d suggest that if we start connecting canonical crimes with unconfirmed crimes right away then we can end up on the wrong path.
I also think that the GSK is a completely different perpetrator than Zodiac. He was a sexual deviant who eventually became a serial murder. There’s little in the case evidence to suggest that Zodiac had any sexual motivation at all. Apples and oranges.

Oh yeah they are very different offenders, but they can all share similar ruse tactics. Ted Bundy did the whole incapacitated with a broken limb routine. Lake Berryessa wasn’t the robbery the targets thought it would be. Just a means to an end. The end goals can differ from offender to offender but the means to get there can be the same. I think the robbery ruse is practically something an offender can just come up with on their own independently without having learned it from elsewhere.
I wouldn’t go beyond CJB in non-canonical associations with the Zodiac crimes but it’s hard not to avoid it because of the strong pull towards her crime as a Zodiac crime. There is another ruse there. The non-functional car he made sure wouldn’t work.
Did you know Stine also had bruising? On the thumb of his hand. I think there is good reason to believe when he put his hand back to get the money, he got a slap of the gun barrel against it coming towards his head.
Maybe Faraday sustained the injury to the right side of his face making impact with the ground. However the injury is there and it is requires an explanation.

But wouldn’t an injury to Faraday’s head have to do with the fact that he was shot in the head.
I have to disagree with working only the 5 we know of so long as a separation of the cases can be made. Nothing wrong with working the two cases separately. Having a knowledge of one can help in solving the other.

It is the way they call it a lump on his face and not a hemorrhage but I would want to see the autopsy report to know that. Hemorrhage, yes gunshot related. Lump really could be anything. He could have gotten it sports wrestling.
The reason why I consider non-canonicals is because I subscribe to the theory of linkage blindness in criminology being a problem especially with serial killers. In fact, there is peer review that even includes the Zodiac in this. So it’s an academic point I just take on board.
A good example is EARONS who turned out to be VR also and the Maggiores killer and both of those outliers were actually the best resolution we got on the guy. So I learned my lesson there the hard way and won’t forget it. However, it’s not for everybody so your point is taken.
