Has anyone ever checked on the dates of the murders to see if there were any anonymous calls prior to the murders to police, possibly getting them to go in another direction so Z knew there would be no cops around? In particular the Stein case since it was not remote in any way. That is, if that can even be checked I guess. That or some other non-victim crime, such as a fire started somewhere or some type of diversion on those days, just prior to the murders?
Actually, I would be very interested in arson records from Zodiac’s active period. David Berkowitz was almost pedantic in his arson activities, keeping detailed logs of all the fires he set (which numbered in the thousands.) I wouldn’t be surprised to find a spike in suspicious fires in the Bay area during the height of Zodiac-mania.

Not like you could check anyway. Such records are either long lost or unavailable. But given that no one has mentioned such a thing in the almost fifty years since the crimes, I consider it unlikely.
Having said that….the crimes speak against such a possibility, given that they were committed late at night and in rather secluded locations. Even the Stine murder occurred rather late (but perhaps early enough for The Zodiac to arrive home comparatively early) and in a relatively desolate locale.
I don’t see the Zodiac as a firestarter anyway, as arsonists are often fascinated with the fire itself, and its scale and power, not the damage to society it causes.

By his own admission, he was very much into explosives. (Whether he ever made a bomb that worked, however, is questionable.)

No kidding….a bus crash, some goings-on with the Hell’s Angels, a drug bust and a double-murder–to say the least.
