Red herrings are sometimes left by more forensically aware criminals. Leaving things, saying things, writing things, etc.
So for this exercise, just suggestions. You don’t have to prove they are red herrings, just suggest what they could be. So what are they?

I think that was to show he was the real murderer. BUT I think his the witness got the wrong car colour and that’s why he emphasises the color.

The ciphers, the threat of attacking school buses with children and the claim of using "airplane cement" on his fingers to disguise fingerprints. There is more, but those are the 3 that comes into my mind.

I believe he emphasized the color being brown. because he was planning to frame someone else for his crimes who had a brown car. He did however use a brown colored car that night. We know that because Mike M saw it and said it was very much like the brown car Darlene was driving, only a bit larger than her car. The car I saw in Vallejo the winter of 1968 with who I believe was the Zodiac, had a light brown/ tan colored car that looked like Darlene’s car, only that car was a Mercury Comet.
