I have one more name for you from the police reports, maybe you can check, and put the pic here.

This guy was interesting because in the reports, his Mother mentioned that he was living in Washington at the time of the report, but he had last been home for a few days for Christmas (in 1968 During LHR attack). He looks similar to the sketch. I have to look his name back up

Great Post Tahoe….Wow it really shows how many of the players, whose names we would hear through the years knew each other, esp. the ones who graduated in the 50’s. Now would Rick Crabtree, be the brother, 1/2 brother of James Crabtree? That Ricky Burton looks like early pics I’ve seen of Mageau. I’d never seen a pic of Dean Ferrin before.

From the Vallejo HS, 1961 Yearbook and mentioned in the reports…

Not sure how, or why police wanted to know about Tye. He went to college & work in Seattle area in the 60’s. I think it’s pretty interesting that the last time his Mom had seen him was during Christmas 68 (Lake Herman Rd)when he had come home for a few days. Wonder how much they followed up on this? Not accusing this guy of anything

Read his Dad’s Obituary (wonder if Russell knew faraday??)

Russell Pearson Tye
Feb. 3, 1917 – June 6, 2012
Russell Pearson Tye died of a sudden heart attack at age 95 on June 6, 2012 at Palm Drive Hospital, Sebastopol. He had a full and interesting life and lived it with extreme grace and dignity. He was born in Baraboo, Wisconsin on Feb. 3, 1917 to Russell Frederick and Alpha Blanche (Pearson) Tye. He spent his childhood in Southern CA. He attended Pasadena High School. During the depression, his father leased a gold mine and moved the family to Bodie, CA., and Russell became a gold miner. His father died shortly after the move and Russell, who was just 17, took over the lease and ran the mining crew until the lease expired. He was hired by the Bodie Gold Ore Mill and when the Bodie mill closed he and his mother moved to Republic, Washington, to help build a new mill there. He met and married Iris Plant in 1938. After the birth of their first daughter, Sherrill, the family moved to Seattle where he attended the University of Washington and began his long career with the Federal Government at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton. He was a reservist in the U.S. Marine Corp.
In 1952 he became the head of Public Works at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, CA. Among his many accomplishments during his twenty-year tenure were being the "trigger" man to launch the submarine USSN Hawkbill and, in 1954, he developed and curated a Museum at Mare Island for the Mare Island Centennial. He retired as the Group Superintendent of the Mechanical Group in 1972.
After the death of his wife, Iris, he married Ruthann (Chamberlin) Friis in 1973. He began the second stage of his working career first as a consultant for Bechtel Corporation and then in real estate in Vallejo, Napa and finally in Cazadero where he resided for the past 32 years.
He was a longtime member of the Episcopal Church and served as Senior and Junior Warden and Vestry member of most of the churches he attended in the communities in which he and his family lived. He was one of the first members of St. Andrews-in-the-Redwoods Mission in Monte Rio and he was the Lay Vicar there from 1986 to 2003.
A 38 year member of the Boy Scouts of America, he began as a Boy Scout Troop Leader and served in many Scouting capacities, including Council President of the Silverado Area Council for two terms. He was one of the originators of BSA’s Sacramento River kayak trips and made many of those trips first with his son, Russ, and later with his son, John. On a national level, he was appointed to the Ceremonies and Shows Staff, as was his wife, Ruthann. He was Technical Director of the Opening and Closing Shows for the Boy Scout National Jamborees in 1973 and 1977 and worked many National Jamborees, Explorer Olympics and National Council meetings which took the couple to venues all over the United States. He is the recipient of Scouting’s Silver Beaver Award.
An active community volunteer, he served as President or board member of the Mare Island Master Mechanics and Foreman’s Association, the Mare Island United Crusade, Catholic Social Services, Mare Island Museum and Historical Foundation, and numerous professional and charitable organizations wherever he lived and worked. Russell was a Master Mason in good standing and a life member of Occidental Lodge #72, Seattle, Washington.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Iris (Plant) Tye; his daughter, Linda (Tye) Stevens, and his granddaughter, Tamara Stevens.
Russell is survived by his wife, Ruthann; daughters, Sherrill (Norman) Evans, Melissa Elizabeth (William) Ballowe; his sons, Russell J. Tye and John Friis; eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews; an extended family of Godchildren, and friends who lovingly referred to him as Papa.
A celebration of Russell’s life will be held Friday, June 22, at 2 p.m., at The Church of the Incarnation, 550 Mendocino Ave., Santa Rosa, CA. In lieu of flowers the family would prefer donations in Russell’s name be made to St. Andrew’s in the Redwoods Episcopal Mission, P.O. Box 721, Monte Rio, CA 95462; Mare Island Historic Park Foundation, Save Our Sail Project, 257 Cottonwood Drive, Vallejo, CA 94591; The Boy Scouts of America, Mt. Diablo Silverado Council, 800 Ellinwood Way, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523

As told to me by a Vallejo guy.

Rick Crabtree, was the guy that hung out with Darlene a few months before the Z got to her. He was a trouble maker and alway got into havoc. As a teenager he accidentally shot his older brother out in the fields. He took his Dad’s 22 rifle from the house and started shooting it. He shot at his brother & killed him instantly, he said he didn’t think it was loaded. He later dropped out of school & got heavy into the drug scene. This guy thinks this is why Darlene let him hang out at her house. He feels that it’s true, that Darlene knew who the Z was, he also feels Rick Çrabtree knew the Z as well.
In the mid 70’s, Rick Crabtree lived on a hill top of Virginia Street. Someone saw him acting real shaky, he said some guy was after him, he was carrying a gun with him. They don’t know if the guy after him was the Z or a drug dealer. Rick Crabtree was pretty scary. They feel Rick Crabtree died of an over dose. They don’t feel Rick Crabtree was smart enough to be the Z, but but probably knew the Z, that he was just crazy, out there & into drugs.
I was also told of the shooting by another friend, so I know it to be true. Let’s dig around more on Rick Crabtree & see what we can find.

Rick Crabtree’s family use to live off of PINE St. and Sheridan St. in a trailer park that their Dad owned back then. When Rick shot his brother they moved to the Palisades Apartments. (Now called Harbor Apt’s)

This is the only thing I can find that meets the information you’ve given as far as vital records are concerned.

Seems odd that Darlene would befriend a guy so much younger than herself at that time. Perhaps he was a friend with or went to school with one of her sisters.

Maybe Darlene was friends (more-so) with the older brother. Or, Rick could have been in the group of friends Mageau hung out with. Looks like Rick would have been around 18 in ’69. Mike was 19. If I’m doing my math right…

Thank you, Seagull as I wanted to see the DOD. I don’t find the age thing too strange as MM was class of 67 & Rick Crabtree, Class of 69. Both younger then Darlene, but sounds like all liked to party, so that’s the common bond.

Was board and revisiting Darlene’s address book today and after cross-referencing some names, John Jansen lived at 223 Sonora Pass Boulevard in Vallejo. That address is within the same neighborhood, and only a quick walk to the address of the couple Z sent the Oakland A’s tickets to. Thought that was interesting.

What if was no ‘accident’ and darlene saw him murder him? Was she there when he was shot? I’d love to know that whole angle (whom see might have seen ‘kill a guy’) IF it happened. ;)

Tahoe,

am I correct with my assumption that ‘Bob Tarbox’ is the only person (on your list) who was even ‘contacted’ by Z? If he is the same person: Is it possible that he does not want to reveal Z’s identity as he knew him from school as a ‘friend’? Did Bob Tarbox even live in Vallejo and if so – where?

His office was in San Francisco, correct? Thus, what made Z contact him instead of any other SF lawyer? In that case, Z must have had known him from Vallejo..?
