Yes, really impressive work Mike. Mr. Qvale was a parent at our school (same school as Lindsey Robbins), so my first reaction was like Lindsey’s, that’s insane. Your book touches on a lot though, I’m going to read it carefully.

Hi Xcaliber,

Thanks. Yes! By all means, read the book I have been surprised at the lack of discussion about my book on the various websites. There is a lot that will be controversial in it–the updated profile, my analysis of the bus bombs, the second radian, and the Norse references, especially the one on the Avery card, to name a few. Let everyone here know what you think when you are finished.

I have always said that the people who will be the hardest to convince are the people who thought they knew Mr. Qvale. For instance, if I had told you that he got in on the ground floor of the public discussion of flying saucer phenomenon in 1947, you would say I am nuts and that people like him wouldn’t do something as crazy as to talk about UFO’s and little green men. But he did and got on the front pages of two local newspapers because of it, as detailed in my book. Someone else we know liked frunt page coverage…can you guess who? ;)

Let me ask you a question: Did you, Lindsey and "other" kids from the neighborhood have to take a bus to school, or is it walking distance? Did Qvale or his wife drive to the school every day and pick students up in the afternoon?

Just looking through your posts and you are probably the perfect person to read my book, especially about the Stine murder, since you know the neighborhood. Do you remember the gate in the wall on West Pacific to the back of the home at like 3634 Jackson? It is the home just east of 3636 Jackson street, where Qvale lived. That gate is discussed in my book and there is also a photo of it. That is how Z could have snuck home through the Presidio and come into the yard next to his own.

I read that one of my detractors said in another thread that I have "shoehorned" Qvale to fit the evidence of the case. When you read my book, you will see that is ANYTHING but the truth!

The other thing I like is that you seem to have an open mind and do not already feel you know who Z was. Read on…..

Mike,

One interesting sidelight – one day Mr. Qvale brought the James Bond Goldfinger car to school as a display. This was the famous Aston Martin from the movie. I’m placing that as 1965.

Not familiar with that gate but I’ll take a good look around next time I’m down there.

-Thanks

Richard Grinell gave your book a good plug on his site Mike R. I definitely want to read it!

Hi,

I had not seen that before but thank you Richard for the plug and the kind words. And thanks Druzer for pointing this out to me. I hope you enjoy reading the book. Even if you happen to disagree with my suspect, the book is full of original research that I believe anyone who is interested in the case would find interesting.

I’m sure I will enjoy it Mike, especially if there is any info in there on that old PI Peek-A-Boo Pennington who seems to be referenced in the Halloween card. Your POI has some link to him doesn’t he? I once had a crazy thought that the Bates letter symbol looked like his logo which is ridiculous of course but now I can’t un-see it!

Hi,

Well, KQ certiainly walked in in the same social circles as Belli, who worked hand in glove in the 1940s and possibly later with Pennington. I do discuss one possible scenario involving those three in the book but I do not have any proof of KQ and Pennington having butted heads at any time. However, of all the suspects KQ was certainly old enough to have come to the attention of that pair, as opposed to other, younger suspects. In fact, the Pennington connection was dismissed by many researchers very early on because their POI was too young in the mid to late 1940s and early 1950s to have come into Pennington’s sights.

Toschi allegedly told Lyndon Lafferty that Zodiac "could be as old as 50." I’ve always wondered what that was based on, since there aren’t/weren’t a lot of 50 year-old suspects, and the oldest estimate (Fouke) pegged him at 35-45. I know Lafferty’s suspect was 49, but KQ was actually 50 at the time of the Stine murder.

So if Mr X is Id’d at the site, what sense does it make for him to mail a piece of Stines’s shirt in a letter, thereby providing a link between himself and the murder?

The letter only proved a link between Zodiac and the Stine killer. The letter didn’t prove a link to Mr. X.

That is the point of what I am questioning. If those that think Mr. X is the Zodiac and he was spotted in the neighberhood would he then mail a portion of Stine’s shirt just to confirm it was him. Hey guys, just come and take me in, I will wait for you outside my house on Jackson.

Does anyone know (and sorry if I missed a discussion about it on this board) if Lindsay Robbins (or the other kids) have ever indicated that any of the well known suspects look like the man they saw outside the cab that night? Bryan Hartnell has stated he would recognize Z’s voice if he ever heard it again. So what about the kids?…seems like they would be able to tell if any of the suspects could be Z or not.

Mike Rodelli’s book Hunt for Zodiac features extensive quotes from Lindsey Robbins, from interviews with retired Vallejo detective Jim Dean in 2003. Robbins said that Kjell Qvale’s resemblance to Zodiac was "extraordinary," among other things.

Belated thanks, Coffee Time :)

Hi,

Viking, I’ve read this thing you keep repeating but it makes no sense to me. How does Z sending a piece of shirt tell everyone he is Qvale and that he lives in the neighborhood? Qvale was stopped as a potential WITNESS not a suspect. Nobody in their right mind would accuse a millionaire of stealing $8 from somebody and killing him to do so. That is what they were looking for the night of the Stine murder, not Zodiac. Just a cab robber, not Zodiac and KQ was not even a suspect in the robbery.

Was it ever confirmed the dog walker was Qvale?

I’m in the middle of Mike’s book.

It’s meticulously researched, and an eye-opener.
