Too funny Trav, I wondered why I had to delete only one of the attachments. I think I’ve got everything there now, I added pages 83 and 84.

Good Catch once again Stitch, but seems there are only two possibilities:

1- The woman from Atlanta knew Eric somehow, and recognized his voice, or

2- The woman was wrong altogetherabout recognizing the voice, and she did not know the person that called in.

Those are the only two possibilities, since the only caller heard talking on the tv, was Eric. The Atlanta thing caught my attention, but either way, seems as if her recognizing the voice (or rather thinking she did)doesnt matter since the voice she heard was Eric, and he wasnt Z

Agreed Morf and I’m also leaning toward option 2 she was mistaken.

Was she though or did she actually recognise Eric’s voice?. It was determined Eric was the caller due to his subsequent communication attempts with Belli, wasn’t he? Did this information precede that identification and possibly aid in it?

I don’t know Chief, he’s very smart or very dumb.

I thought how they found out Eric was the caller was that they traced the calls to a mental asylum where Eric was at the time. This woman may have been right too and identified Eric as the caller. What I don’t get is where did she first know the man she informed on, from Jacksonville Florida, Atlanta Georgia or California ? It’s hard to tell from the files.

I think the Dunbar Show was local to the San Francisco area. I do not believe it was broadcast nationally so the question is were clips of the show on the national news or was the Atlanta woman in the Bay Area on the day it was broadcast?

Can anyone answer a question for me that I should already know?

When Belli appeared on the Dunbar show, was the real reason for his appearance explained? In other words, was Belli introduced to be there to "answer questions for the Zodiac Killer" or was his appearance on the show not explained? The first scenario would open the door to every nut and Zodiaphile to call in to the show. The second scenario would go a long way toward identifying Eric Weil as the 2 a.m. caller to Oakland P.D. The youtube clips I’ve seen don’t really address how Belli’s appearance on the show was explained.

Good question.
I thought the premise for the show was that the Zodiac Killer phoned the police in Oakland and said he wanted to speak on air on the Dunbar show – to either F Lee Bailey or Melvin Belli (the most famous two defence lawyers of the time) and that Belli was the one available.
(Yes, Belli was perhaps more famous as a tort lawyer, but let’s not split hairs.)
Since I’m not an American (did I mention?) I’ve just assumed that the Oakland PD were convinced of the validity of the call, and thought that opening the show would be of some use (although I can’t think why). Further, I assumed that the Dunbar show was a local phone-in, and it was a simple "hijack", but you know what they say about assuming. I’d love to hear the correct and definitive answer to your question….

I think they asked people not to call in so that Zodiac could call in. Somebody had it posted a long time ago on Youtube I think

Thanks, Trav. That’s the video I had seen but it begins after the call was placed. Still doesn’t answer the question of whether the real reason for Belli’s appearance was explained on the show prior to Weil’s call. If morf is correct (and he probably is), I think it shows an incredibly naivete (which may be understandable at the time) that everyone else would sit back and wait for the REAL Zodiac to call in to the show.

Weil actually doesn’t strike me as a hoaxster. I think he was probably so disorganized at the time that he either believed he was Zodiac or just incorporated the request into his own existing delusional system. It’s not hard to fathom why he was committed to a state hospital at the time. I’ve brought up the question before about the likelihood of Weil being able to place a phone call at 2 a.m. from a state hospital. Usually phone access is limited in a psychiatric hospital and staff is checking that patients are sleeping. That and the fact that the call-taker at Oakland P.D. did not recognize Weil’s voice lead me to believe the original caller was probably someone else, Zodiac or not.

Very informative post by ACE here.

Follow the links and read. Answers some of the questions we have asked here regarding the Dunbar show.

I’mnot sure hearing Z’s voice would be particularly helpful. Clever as he is/was, wouldn’t he disguise it? BTW, has anyone pieced together a reasonable scenario dealing with his rather bizarre travelogue re his Mexico adventure?
