Somehow an interesting read, here is an excerpt (reg. Paul Stine):
"For the first time, the killer had not chosen to attack a couple. In the previous two attacks, both male victims had survived without the Zodiac immediately knowing. The pattern of the Zodiac attacks suggests that even though the blunt of his wrath was more so targeted at the female victims, he feared the male victims much more. Preceding Stine’s murder, the Zodiac had failed to kill two of his male victims. Fearing them and feeling a sense of failure for not being superior to his male victims, the killing of Paul Stine might have been a way to prove himself. Murdering a man, may have made him think that he is still in control and invincible despite his previous two mistakes."

Kelleher and Van Nuys came to the same conclusion with their profile in ‘This Is The Zodiac Speaking.’
