With the Mailbox thread indicating that his activity was clustered in the northeast portion of the city, and the evidence that Zodiac had some connection with the military…could it be possible that he was a civilian contractor, perhaps an electrical worker, at the Presidio which was an active military base at the time? It would certainly put him at the epicenter of the letter drops as well as Stine’s murder.

Sure anything is possible I guess? I was looking at a driver for the Presidio, because he had the last name of one of the suspects I was looking at. I would think that if Zodiac was staying in the Presidio because he was working there. He wouldn’t be walking in a easterly direction on Jackson st., he would be going west instead. There was a letter drop at Washington and Cherry. One of the letters was mailed a few miles south of that location, not near the Presidio.

Sandy,
How do you know this information? Several of us have been investigating the letter drops in the "Mailboxes" thread and there doesn’t seem to be any official evidence indicating exact locations of letter drops – just neighborhoods. Can you tell us how you came by this information?

A few years ago while on Tom Voigt’s San Francisco Zodiac crime scene bus tour. He took us to where one of the postmen spotted a letter that looked like Zodiac’s printing.
So that is how we knew where one of the letters was found. I will have to check the address of that mail box for you. One of my Z friends Seagull ,was with us on that tour, she and I spoke about checking that area out for any known suspects living near there. Hopefully she reads this today and can save me the time of hunting for that address?
Found the one where we were told the postman spotted the Z like letter. It was Taraval and 23rd st SF. Sorry I do not remember which letter that was. That area I believe was the Parkside area. I am pretty sure that the mail box is still there?

Yes, I’m aware of this information, but the first mention of this is the video Tom posted of the 45th anniversary. There is no indication of this information anywhere else that I can find.
Sandy, do you know how Tom came about this information?

I can only guess that the information came from Det. Mike Maloney who Tom and I knew well enough to have drinks with in SF at the Blarney Stone. He was working the Zodiac case before he passed away. A wonderful person who worked very hard on the case. He is sorely missed by many who cared and loved him.
My "POI" (hate that word!) was a college/university student from ’66 to ’71, which would have given him opportunities to travel freely.

Interesting. I hope Tom can confirm.

Would the seasons have anything to do with figuring out his profession?
All the crimes were committed between June and December. Not in the January-May. So everything in the second half of the year, none in the first half.
Johns would be the exception, if she was a potential zodiac victim.
I think maybe the coast guard.
1) An engineer with a defense/aerospace contractor. Possible specialties of aerospace or electrical engineering.
2) An early computer/IT guy.
3) An intelligence officer.
4) nuclear physicist/weapons expert.
5) Outside of employment in that military-industrial/aerospace/intelligence sector and outside of engineering, I would go with school teacher as the best option.

I always suspected Rick Barry.
A job involving blueprints, drafting, technical drawings. The ciphers suggest someone with plenty of patience and skill.

I doubt Zodiac had the education and/or intelligence necessary for these types of jobs.
I have come to the conclusions that Zodiac was more blue collar, working class sort of guy. No education beyond high school or trade school. Worked a trade as a mechanic, plumber, carpenter. Perhaps worked on a land survey crew. Something along those lines.
