That police report doesn’t necessarily mean anything. That is the sort of TH nitpicking, when insisting that every word of the police reports must be taken literally and if two accounts are not identical, one should assume that one or both are incorrect.

In reality the PD probably just phoned the FBI, asked them if they took a look at what they had sent in and the feds said, "Yup. It’s good." and then wrote it up in the report that the FBI and Don had both solved it.

If the FBI solved the 408, why would they not release that report along with the reports that they did release talking about what they did with the other codes? Doesn’t make sense.

Duck: Yep, that’s what I was getting at above.

"Independently solved" can mean both this and that – including that the FBI (simply) verified the Harden solution (as we know they did).

A source, who I will not name, is investigating the possibility Don’s Wife, Bettye, may have had something to do with the Z letters. They have been looking into this for over a year. This source is also the proud owner of the copy of Graysmith’s book, inscribed & autographed by Bettye. That’s all I can or will say about it. I personally don’t think that Don or his Wife Bettye were involved in the Zodiac letters or crimes, but this is certainly an interesting thread.

I think the accusations that Don and Bettye were involved in the Zodiac crimes is probably the most disgusting "theory" that I have heard. I’ve heard it before, I don’t know if it’s the same guy. The only thing that would one up it would be if someone said that Bryan was the one who stabbed Cecelia. No wonder this guy doesn’t want to be named.

I heard Bryan stabbed Cecilia and then himself, once. I think that’s probably not what happened.

Bettye Harden seems to have been a very bright and very troubled woman.

My usual stance when it comes to theories is that people have to be allowed to entertain ’em as long they don’t pester anyone or defame anyone. That said, I don’t think I’ll ever understand why anyone would want to spend time on something like this, it just seems preposterous to me.

Hi-

Pretty hard to stab yourself in the back. Plus Cecelia lived long enough to have told the cops what had happened, although maybe she did and the cop didn’t think it was important at the time.

Why are the Harden’s off limits when it comes to this case ? They involved there selves from the get go solving the cipher and we all know LE looks at people that want to involve themselves in crimes. Get off your high horses people and if this case is going to be solved , nobody is out of the box period! Something is weird with Bettye Harden writing in Graysmith’s novel she started the Zodiac and can end it and it will shock the world!

I find that statement damning and strange as heck and not to mention her cursive written even looks very similar to Zodiac’s printed writing! Anyhow no stone unturned when it comes to solving this case period!

Ps. I ‘m not the one that has the videos on the Harden’s on You Tube or own the book Bettye wrote in. Just my two cents and we need to keep a open mind on everything!

I have no idea who has the Graysmith’s book on this board that Bettye wrote in. I applauded there efforts for keeping a open mind and am curious what they find! There is some smoke there.

Ok. Why don’t you please post your real name and personal info so that I can plaster it around everywhere accusing YOU of being the killer. Doesn’t matter if it’s true or not, right? Anything to solve the case. I know that you wouldn’t have a problem with that. I’m sure that your friends, family and coworkers would understand just as well.

Hi duccking,
I understand your concerns, but it concur with Stitch Mallone’s post, that we should be able to look at & discuss anyone & everyone involved in this case. That’s a lot different then all of us researchers, who aren’t involved in any way.
So carry on everyone & dig away, as we all want this case solved.

Zincerely, Zam *

Maybe I shouldn’t have phrased it that way but was just trying to get my point across. Zam I’m sorry but Bettye brought suspicion upon herself from what she wrote in a public library book and leaving her name. I’m sorry but when you had something to do with the case from the beginning and later claim in a public library book that you know the whole story. You should expect to be look at. My two cents and I’ll leave it at that.

Within the libel laws and board rules people can write about any POI. We have had threads on Harden as Z and Graysmith as Z. So again there is no censorship. But people can politely say they think such ideas are nonsense.

From what I understand Bettye had mental health issues. She also continued to work on trying to solve the 340 and the Z case in general. The book inscription says the last half of the book is theory but when tells the true story it will shake the Earth. I read that as saying when she solves the 340 and solves the case Zodiac will be known. She started the case by solving the 408 with her husband and she will finish it.

I think that is what it means. But those who think it may mean something more are free to pursue that theory.

Thanks AK and yes the freedom you all give to the members is awesome and why in my opinion this is the best Zodiac board! As for Bettye it was sad to hear she had mental problems but she seems very sane and intelligent from what she wrote in the library book. Quote from her, This is my story. I started the Zodiac case, and ended it. The last half of this book is theory. When I write the true ending, it will shake the Earth. Bettye Harden. To me she is saying she has some inside information that others aren’t privy to and again I think that is a damning statement. My point is why is it so far fetched to not look into the Hardens since they was the first to solve the code and later Bettye saying this in a public library book ? Just seems like it the general masses just not on the site to say don’t go there… Why not ? Again just my two cents and am not looking for argument unless it civil .

No its fine. The owner of the book is looking into the theory and that is fine. Zodiac was a man so not sure if the theory is that she was Z with Don or someone else. Yes Bettye and Don solved the code. I don’t see that as suspicious. I read Bettye’s statement in the book as relating to her code work. If you or others see it differently that is ok. Her daughter wrote about her mother’s struggles with mental illness. And it may have been that illness that allowed her to enter the mind of a killer and think that he would be self centered and atart the message with "I" and to talk about what he liked which was killing. She and her husband led good lives with nothing IMO to suggest they are killers. To me they are heroes who used their creativity, intelligence and hard work to solve the code.

But you and others are free to explore theories of their possible involvement. I understand your reasoning. I wish you well. That is the great thing about this board there are no favored suspects or theories and nobody censoring anything, as long as it is within the law and board rules.
