I ran some more experiments on the 13-symbol cipher, and collected a handful of curiosities surrounding it:

Dave,

On your site, you mentioned "•Eddie Resendes" is a name that fits. You are aware somebody was posting on Tom’s site that there IS a suspect by that name, aren’t you? They claim he is the unknown man in the photo with Darlene. I checked him out, and have some info on him and I might have his pic,I cant remember.

Heres the thread:
http://zodiackiller.fr.yuku.com/reply/12828

He was a real person, and somebody presented some facts about him, but I checked and some of the facts did not match up

Yes. Glurk also found the same name, among many: http://www.zodiackillerfacts.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=375#p5677

I think that name is awfully unusual. It’s not a name like JOE SMITH or something real generic. Would you put more weight in the value of that name? Is it of high value? That guy IS a real guy, but some of what was said about him by his accuser on Tom’s site does not match up with the facts I found about him, for example, he did not go to the High School they said he did. Also, I think I found a pic of him, and he did not look like the unknown man seen with Darlene Ferrin like the person was claiming. I will look thru my notes, and for that pic

EDIT:
Here it is, his 63 & 64 HS pics- (notice the spelling of his last name, different then your cipher result slightly). This guy is the only person in the country with the name Edward Resendes/Rezendez that was about the proper age to attend school with Darlene Ferrin. Sorry, I don’t think he’s the unknown man, by the way, I AM NOT ACCUSING THIS MAN OF BEING INVOLVED WITH ANY CRIMES

Okay, I initially didn’t see any similarity between this guy and the unknown man, but now they both look like they might have the same nose, with a bit of a hook on the end of it, and maybe even the same calik near their foreheads. Anybody have any good clear enhanced versions of the unknown man?

It’s hard to attach any value to the names that match the cipher, since there are multiple matches. Here’s another real person whose name just happens to fit the cipher text perfectly:

Theoretically, would one of the people with that uncommon name be of more value if they lived in the SF bay area? Ernie Zerenner is a real uncommon name, but if he didn’t live in CA, he seems like he would not be as interesting as Resendes/Rezendez, who did live there

Maybe. I think it would depend on how many factors link the name to the case. The placement in Z13 would just be one of the factors.

For what it’s worth, the guy I found named EDWARD REZENDEZ, was the only guy by that name in the USA about the same age to have attended school with Darlene Ferrin, but once again, this guy went to Live Oak HS, and Darlene never went there. Also important to note, there IS a guy by the last name RESENDES in the 1970 solano county directory, a SIDONIO RESENDES at 131 West H in Benicia. I think that both last names should be checked out seeing how you found one in the cipher, and somebody on Tom’s site claims somebody with one of those last names was the unknown guy in the pic with Darlene, and supposedly went to school with her. One way or another, that last name, or a variation of it seems to keep popping up

Then we have this:

Name:
Edward S. Rezendes
Birth:
21 Feb 1920
Death:
18 Oct 2000 – Vallejo, Solano, California, USA

Too old to have been a schoolmate of Darlene. Maybe he had a son?

Spellings possible: Resendes,Rezendes,Resendez,Rezendez

Others with similar names:

Name:
Edward J Resendes
Birth:
13 Jan 1934
Residence:
1983 – Oceano, CA

None of these guys fits right age to be schoolmate of Darlene.

Sorry to take this off topic a bit,I just hate to see some of the names on your list not get checked out.

In Glurk’s list, what does the number after the name represent?

Example- STEVE PETE WEST, 0.00000000062976

I am going to check every one of those names in my 1970 Solano directory

I believe the number represents a composite score based on census data on how common the individual name parts are.

For instance, the census data for STEVE PETE WEST says "STEVE" is 0.246% of all male first names, "PETE" is 0.032% of all male first names, and "WEST" is 0.080% of all last names.

0.246% = 0.00246
0.032% = 0.00032
0.080% = 0.00080

Multiplying those figures together yields 0.00000000062976, which matches Glurk’s score for STEVE PETE WEST.

I’ll go on record as saying that I’m not crazy about exploring suspects based on their "fit" to a 13 symbol cipher with four repeating symbols in which a confirmed liar implicitly promises his identity. Even if they’ve resided in Vallejo…

I’m much more comfortable with the old-fashioned method of trying to connect a pre-considered POI to Zodiac’s cipher construction. "Kane pops punks"- kinda silly but at least we have some established reasons for trying to fit Kane into the ciphers. Few people know that Sarah the Horse has been doranchak’s pet POI for years so I think we should consider his observations with a grain of salt.

Also to your point, entropy:

BTK may have inserted a reference to Wichita killer Floyd E. Anderson in one of his puzzles, presumably as misdirection. So any real name found to fit Z13 could also be misdirection by Zodiac.
