Hey smokie,

Nice new encoder it sounds like.

You may want to look into: viewtopic.php?f=81&t=4236 it’s about a cipher from around the year 1841 that is sequential homophonic. Though it has many errors, intentional or not, randomizing the cycles to a degree. These errors mainly introduce polyalphabetism but also some missing letters. I am still not sure how this cipher works exactly but it seems to mirror the 340 to some degree. What do you think?

Can you lock specific positions to a specific letter, e.g.
‘IGIVETHEM , Z304#9 ‘I’ locked to be its plaintext ‘I’ (i.e. no action taken on that position
as [it is] believed no decipherment step is necessary for that position).

It is a spreadsheet that makes homophonic messages in a lot of different ways so that I can use it to try to experiment and come up with a model that will closely replicate some of the patterns that we see in the symbols of the 340. It does not solve messages.

I read your posts earlier. I am interested and will take a look. Are you wondering if some of the errors are caused by an unknown operation?

I am not sure but I am wondering what is going on. It will probably be allot of work. Feel free to look into it or not.

First order of business would be to verify the numeric transcription by the original cipher: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1S5tpB … D0w6oQ0N0I

I don’t know if you have it already, but here is the original Gil Broza PDF solution paper with transcription:

Thanks glurk, that’s handy.

The cypher contains numerous errors which are not my doing; they can be summarized as follows:

1. Incorrect use of the inverse of the cyphertext letter (i.e. upright letter used instead of upside-down)
2. Wrong choice of case (e.g. lowercase instead of small-caps)
3. Illegibility of the scanned original.

Because of the large amount of errors I wonder if these were intentional or not. And I also wonder if fixing the errors will restore the cycles in the cipher.

Added support for spirals to the transposition solver. It looks for spirals in any set of dimensions, going inwards or outwards in any direction, transposed or untransposed.

This weekend I did something that I always wanted to do. Make a new body of messages that I can make cryptograms from. It is a collection of classic American short stories, from a bunch of different authors, from the 1920s to the 1960s. 1000 messages in all.

Then I had an idea. Rough so far but maybe someone else will want to contemplate the idea. Some type of inscription where when you arrive at a period 1, 2 or 3 unigram repeat, shift over a certain number of columns or rows and continue the inscription from the new column or row. Thinking to avoid the identification of LL, etc. So when coming to a LL, or an E_E, or an A__A, etc, make the shift according to the period. In the end, the shift shows up as periods 16, 32, and 48 unigram repeats, and creates a lot of pivots or partial pivots, but most of the inscription shows up as period 19. The path of the inscription is determined by the plaintext somehow that makes pivots and P19.

Yes. I included the original PDF of the textbook, the Word documents, and the spreadsheet. I copied the first 20 short stories into Word, then deleted everything except the text of the stories. I came up with 1017 messages, but rounded down to 1000, so the last story is underrepresented on the spreadsheet. The Word document is broken up into chunks of 32,640 letters, which you will have to modify by deleting all paragraph symbols. That’s it.

Thanks for sharing that smokie. I like this idea, but I don’t know when I’ll find the time to take a closer look. At the moment, unfortunately, my time is still very limited. But I still have one comment: I don’t think Zodiac was worried about Periods >1. Avoiding direct repetitions or bigrams (i.e. P1) can be quite possible. But Periods >1? How much work is it to do that with pen and paper? If you work without computers and statistics, are you even aware of something like Periods? I would look for a simpler method.

Thanks smokie.

Could you make some test ciphers for me from that corpus? Length 340 and 100 symbols each if possible. 3 will do. I could make them myself but would like some variety.
