Hi..

..just read through the Z letters on Tom’s site. Some things got into my mind when reading it.

1. There are loads of spelling errors. Such as ‘supicisous’ or ‘unnoticible’ to name only two. However, those are not only spelling errors but are they also obviously written wrong phonetically.

2. Sometimes even the grammar structure is wrong or at least insufficient to comply with a native speaker’s english grammar.

3. Z did not very often use complicated sentences and did he also not like to use longer (+7 letters) words. Besides that, all (most) of his writing is in sort of a ‘staccato’ style. If you pronounce each word, e.g. starting with the Belli letter, you’ll find out that in most of his letters Z writes-as-if-there-was-a-phon-etic-break-between-each-word.

Therefore I got the impression that Z had troubles in spelling, grammar, complicated sentence structures and elevated verbal expression (longer words), all at the same time. Or had to write them down slowly, word by word. I somehow do wonder – why?

Dyslexia is one thing, but does it explain a lack of longer words as well as grammatical errors? Or slower writing? And, if we put the dyslexia for a moment away, why did Z not use more complicated sentence structures? Or longer words / sentence structures? Or at least a correct grammar, even if spelling the words incorrectly?

It somehow appears as if each word was written down one by one, without its context to the whole sentence or text. Similar to a dictation (hopefully not..). Of course it could also lead to the opinion that Z simply was rather simple-minded and uneducated (stupid like a piece of wood, so to say..), therefore unable to understand how to write certain words or full sentences correctly. At least Z was not able to set-up a fluent letter on a regular basis, as it might have been necessary in a white-collar-job.

Two more points. In connection with the trigger mech of his bomb, he mentions that he might keep it in his basement for future use. Although just a small detail, this could mean that Z was in the ownership or possession of a building having such a basement. Therefore not a bungalow w/o basement and probably rather not a multi-flat building (SF) with only smaller basement departments but rather a building with a normal to larger sized basement including some space for repair, storage etc.

And finally: Z mentions at least two locations in his letters: ‘Riverside’ activities and ‘Vallejo’. In one of his letters he mentions to ask a ‘Vallejo cop’ as proof about an ‘electric gun sight’ he had used. An electric gun sight, in fact, was not very common during that time, imo. But it was new on some guns, e.g. the Qwik-Point from 1970:

Thoughts.

Have you read Keliher and Van Nuys book? Some of the same points you mention are in that book. Although I don’t agree that Zodiac had a multiple personality disorder.
EDIT: I also forgot to mention in the same book they talked about basement’s in the bay area. The term basement in this sense may colloquially refer to a covered garage. So I wonder if this is what zodiac was referring to.
