Re: Crime scene doodles, no there ain’t, that I recall. That’s also curious, since this is the scene closest to super-criminologist Hal Snook’s lab, and right in his back yard. Yes, a diagram of the car scene a la BRS, and then perhaps another showing the footsteps and the path going up and down to the lakeside (with a little picture of a beer bottle) would have been nice, no?
It would certainly have eliminated all the dumb questions about whether it was parked on a turn-out or a lay-by or on the road, and whether there was room in front AND behind for another car, and did the car move between these shots, and all that stuff.
Supressed, you think, this info?
Well.
The park ranger rolled up the crime scene in a blanket and walked off with it, the Ambulance wasn’t called immediate, the crime scene info and sketching isn’t complete and isn’t great (well yes, maybe it’s not been released), some of the reports don’t tally very well and we now think there’s a chance they rolled the car back and forward between shots, and dragged a tow rope around over the footprints.
Other than that it seems classic almost CSI-TV-quality stuff, really.
Hal Snook liked being in the photos didn’t he, "hunkering". And it’s some nice work there, twirling that fingerprint brush.
Oh! And Hal himself wrote "head lights" instead of "tail lights" in his report. Numpty. I’d forgotten that.
Next question – whats the tow-rope for if not towing, then? To keep people away from the car? Step over this rope at your peril? Yes, could be.
LE was pretty detailed in their descriptions of what they did. I would think they would mention if they moved the car with a rope to take photos…but maybe that’s just me.
Also, in regards to the parking "area". There weren’t parking lots. It was just dirt parking alonside the main road. Still like that today, but now they don’t let you park there. They have since built parking lots. Everyone used to just pull into the dirt/grass area alongside the road and hike down the hill. Was the only option back then. No side-by-side parking, but plenty of bumper-to-bumper.
Like this—this spot is directly above the crime scene and where I believe Bryan was parked. Where the "white box" is, there is a path going down, and back then there was the wire fence (which he could have just reached through if Bryan was parked close to it), with a wooden stile to cross over. If you read the reports, it seems to read the tire tracks were on the other side of the stile.
The stubby posts were not there then of course. They were put there to prevent parking. (sorry off subject–I’ll create a new thread soon with more photos to pinpoint the location)
Ayuh, T., yes, if they’d moved the car they may well have said so, indeedy.
I’d forgotten that they ordered up the guy with the stubby aeroplane to take some photo’s from the air, too, so perhaps they got some good ones, and felt there was no need for a diagram…..
I think you’ve found just the spot there, btw, although perhaps that’s the wrong side of the road and the other side (where there’s an "Oak Springs" sign at the end of the lay-by) might be it.
The reports are a little misleading!

Nope…wouldn’t have been across the street.
Didnt want to read thru the entire thread to find this answer, but I would simply ask Bryan what hand Z was holding the gun with when he approached them (if its not already in the reports),as that is likely his strong and dominant hand

Go for it! lol

Might have been!
Not that I can be bothered to go back into Google street view and find it for you, mind you. It’s too hot.
I would simply ask Bryan what hand Z was holding the gun with when he approached them…
I like the idea. Say, in the drawing he was using his right hand for the gun, and in the movie too. I’m happy with that!
Also, find out if Z kept in touch and if he has an email where we could reach him. That would be handy.
I believe you’re just being flippant, here. He’s not given out an email address and he’s not on Facebook or Twitter. I’ve looked. *Poked Tongue*

I think there is enough info to know they didn’t cross the street.
The police reports state the knife/sheath was on his right side. I honestly believe MOST would put the gun on the side the would draw it on..but I say "most". Don’t know if I’d be confident to go with Graysmith…book or movie. It’s anyone guess really.
While Zodiac may not be on Facebook and Twitter, you’d be surprised who you might find. You could ask Bryan, but I bet he ain’t tellin’….
IMO Right handed. By the way, I have a piece of furniture that could have my suspect’s palm prints on it. I see there are online print dusting kits.
Any suggestions by our Law Enforcement guys on taking palm prints or which materials to use?
