So, I was thinking about the thirteen eyes on the Halloween Card and fell down the google rabbit hole. I ran across this story about Henry Lichtenberg.

Basically, the guy was condemned to death for a murder he didn’t commit. The real culprit was also apprehended, but the judges couldn’t decide between the two, so they decided to leave it up to God. Both men were told to roll a pair of dice, highest total wins. The murderer rolled a 12 — not good — but Henry miraculously rolled a 13. One of the dice split into 2, giving him two sixes and a one. The story refers to the dots on the dice as "eyes".

To sum up: Henry, a man doomed to death, was saved by a pair of dice.

Pretty much standard zynchro there. I was also intrigued that the story came from a publication of the Netherlands Reformed Church, which took root in the Midwest. I wonder if Z spoke dutch. Is there evidence of that in the letters? Also, the church emblem is interesting (like so many others).

From wikipedia:

Some members owned slaves—the most famous of whom was Sojourner Truth—and the church did not support abolitionism. In rural areas, ministers preached in Dutch until about 1830–1850, then switched to English, at the same time finally dropping the use of many traditional Dutch clothing and customs.[/list:u:dl5ddt6c]

C-Low, A dice game, played with 3 die, where the highest roll wins, unless 4-5-6 is rolled, this being ‘C-low’. Basically, 4-5-6 takes all. Other than C-low, 6-6-6 is the highest roll, naturally
1-2-3 is the enemy, you never wanna see em again
6-6-6 is the devils mix, and in this games the devis your friend
4-5-6 makes you king of the roll, then you take in all the dough
cause the only way to beat the devils mix is 4-5-6 C-low!
