I checked this out and I am surprised at how well it lines up, particularly with north/south. What lets it down is that the starting point is so arbitrary. You mention you think the other side is filled out to create symmetry, but this is really the weakest part of the theory. Also it is just so profoundly obscure. I mean it’s difficult to imagine the killer even coming up with such an oblique symbol.

If the other end of the symbol lined up with a significant landmark, thus creating a book end, and logical start and end points, that would truly be a different story.

I’m not sure I would say “solved” but it’s an interesting angle. If I’m correct lining it up, the far left point terminates in Fox Plaza, which is an apartment complex that opened in 1966. Currently there is a post office in the bottom of the building. Not sure if it was there in 1969-70. That location is rather close to Mason and Geary.

It was also said in the video that Zodiac could have possibly laid down more street than needed to give a clue that it was a street layout.

The right top part of the F makes a right at 5th and Mission as found on the Halloween Card address. The left top part of the symbol makes a left very close to Market and Taylor street.

Market and Taylor is the address of the RKO Golden Gate Movie Theater. The same theater, the RKO Movie "The Most Dangerous Game" premiered at in 1932. The theater was called the RKO Golden Gate through the 1960’s. Hanson, the film maker came up with an idea to make a movie to catch Zodiac in June of 1970. He rented out the RKO Golden Gate and the film "The Zodiac Killer" premiered in April of 1971. Six months after the Halloween card. Paul Avery was a consultant on the movie or at least wrote a prologue for the movie. RKO Golden Gate Could be the Significant hallmark. Prologue below. Below prologue is Picture of RKO Golden Gate

Interesting solution because it ties together Zodiac’s evident obsessions: letter writing, the Chronicle and pop culture.

Having another look at this and it’s perhaps worth noting that the left hand of the symbol terminus could be running down Golden Gate Ave. Two blocks down that angle and less than a block and a half down from the Golden Gate Theater, at 220 Golden Gate Ave., was the YMCA Central Branch, and on the back side of that block at 351 Turk St. was the YMCA hotel, which had pretty interesting symbols on the front of it, as pointed out by previous posters on this site. It appears a post office was close by as well.

Dwelling more on this, I don’t know if this is the answer, but there is something compelling to me that the symbol on the return address of the Halloween card (and inside) is a sort of map. The differing length V arms that bracket the SF Chronicle fit nicely into the map locating the Chronicle as an eastern terminus. That seems like something to me, especially if you draw lines through the dots and realize they converge above at what true north would be on the map in that orientation. And why put the symbol in the return address location on the envelope? He doesn’t seem to be changing his zodiac symbol because he puts both Z and the symbol inside the card next to the symbol on the envelope. We know Z was into maps at that time because of the Phillips 66 map he sent. Further, the only symbol I could find that was similar (outside of the classic branding symbols already tied to it) were treasure map symbols from Yamashita treasure maps. I don’t know if those were available in the late 60’s but the La Buse treasure map cypher from the ‘30’s has several symbols that correlate with symbols Z used in his other cyphers. It seems very Z like to me that he’d be into treasure maps and such (there was some buzz around them in the 50’s & 60’s) and would get a thrill out of drawing a sort of treasure map symbol to around where he was located or sent the letter – extra threatening because he sent the letter from so close to where Avery was working. In treasure map symbols, the crossed circle sign is used in some for ‘X marks the spot’. Reading the Woolworths thread, it doesn’t escape my attention that the western terminus of the symbol ends 3 or 4 blocks from the Woolworths that was on 5th and is similarly close to the Stine pick up spot.

If you draw a line between Stine’s murder location and the proposed pick up locations, it comes close to intersecting what would be the eastern terminus of the symbol if it starts at the Chronicle -about 3 to 4 blocks from it. It would have been about a 3.5 mile walk – 90 minutes or so.

Acknowledging the obvious that Zodiac could have been lying, the indication from his follow up letter and the eyewitnesses is that he was going East on foot. Regardless of the symbols true intent, any suspects living along that line are of interest to me. He certainly could have walked part or all of that and it should be taken into account that maybe walking was always his planned escape route. I’d like to see a heat map of just the Stine related locations and the letters surrounding them. Besides the newspapers themselves, the Belli’s residence was right down the Lyon Street steps of the Presidio park area in the Pacific Heights, and the Northpoint theater is east from Stine’s murder location as well – a couple miles north of Union Square.

Interesting to me cause my POI lived right across from the Chronicle then.
