When I examined every permutation using an algorithm and a list of about 5000 common first names, the only valid name that fit was CONNIE.

I believe there is only one symbol for "C", but the two symbols do differ slightly.

I ran the same examination against a list of about 89,000 surnames, to see if any of them fit at the beginning before "HENLY". If there’s no middle initial before HENLY, then we’re looking for a seven letter name. Only one match found:

CHOATES

If there’s a middle initial for HENLY, then the name is six letters long. In addition to CONNIE, more matches are found among the list of surnames:

CHOATE, CONDIE, CHOUTE, and COONSE.

I spent a bit of time on this thing, also got Trav to help me with figuring out the symbols, and the best I could get is:

But I agree with doranchak also, the cipher is so unreadable that we just have to guess. That’s my best attempt.

Sounds close – no way to know for sure, unless you can link her to Albany Medical Center.

I was thinking more about this letter, and the pros & cons of it being really from Zodiac. While there are some differences,there are some similarities too. If the letter was from a copycat, the timing is strange. Zodiac’s last confirmed letter before this Albany letter, is 1971 in CA. Z didnt write again until 1974. So in August, 1973, this Albany letter pops up from somebody all the way across the country, after Z has not written in 2 years. WHY? Why would a copycat,out of the blue, just write a letter after the real Z wasnt in the news for 2 years? Add to that,the fact that this is ALBANY of all places-the same place Ferrin, Crabtree,and Gaikowski had all spent time at just before the Z murders started. Not to mention, the Doreen gaul case (a letter found in her room after her murder, typed by somebody claiming to be Zodiac), Gaul’s Family lived within a stone’s throw of the Albany medical Ctr. All of these things make me think that there is some Albany connection of some sort to Z, and that this letter/cipher may be really from him.

Million Dollar question is, why did he pick the person he picked to threaten in the Cipher? Did he know her? Was he related to her? Did she wrong him in some way? I would love to hear from her and find out what connection she had,if any,and if she was familiar with any of the zodiac victims,suspects,or if she knew anybody from Vallejo. If it turned out that she did, that might be a big break in the case.

No, I had a look when you first asked but haven’t found it yet. Those files are hard to search because everything looks the same so you almost have to read everything, especially as a lot of the pages are hard to read so you could easily miss what you’re looking for. Basically I gave up after about 20 mins lol, soz.
