Crime Victim, Deana Hooper
There was a question posted on another site. A poster was looking for his Aunt, a victim of crime.
The young man was asking for help in any information on his Aunt. In a recent meeting with Lyndon
Lafferty, Sandy & I discussed this case with him and realized it tied into this victim.
A little digging and we were able to tap into more information.

Here is the first post by rabbit (on Dennis K’s site, looking for help)
Hi Dennis. I have a very specific question. First, I was very excited and intrigued to learn about you on, I believe it was a Discovery show about the Zodiac killer. The amount of research and work you’ve done is incredible. I have been fascinated for years with serial killers, and in particular the Zodiac killer for personal reasons. It’s my understanding that the Zodiac killer may have upwards of 37 victims, many of whom are still unidentified. Before I was born, my aunt Dina was murdered and her body was later found on a hillside in Vallejo. She was 18 when she was murdered, I believe in ’71 or ’72, perhaps later. She, along with her sister Tana, were adopted by my dad’s parents, Dean and Edith Hooper, from a Chinese orphanage after the Korean War. Her murder was never solved, and I, along with my parents, have often wondered if it could have been the Zodiac killer. Both of my dad’s parents are now dead, and for whatever reason didn’t really pursue finding her killer. Coincidentally, Dean and Edith resided in Aberdeen, WA for many years, up until their death. I have very little information, and I guess I’m just wondering if there is any possibility based on your discussions with Jack or your research that he could have killed Dina. Even though I never met her, I still find her murder to be a very sad tragedy, especially because it’s still unsolved. Thank you for any feedback. I know that you are a very busy man. Thank you also for allowing me to be a part of this forum.

A skeleton found Tuesday in an open field at Columbus Parkways and St.John’s Mine ROad was identified tentatively Weds. by Vallejo police as the remains of an 18 year old Chinese girl from Sonoma.
Det. Richard Hoffman said the skeleton is presumed to be that of Deana Hooper who had been reported missing here last July 15 by her sister, Mrs Tonna Albright of 901 Georgia St. with whom she had been staying.
Hoffman said Mrs. Albright made the tentative identification after viewing the clothing and sandals found at the scene of the discovery and recognized them as her sister’s. Hoffman said Mrs. Albright also identified the ruby-colored birthstone ring on the right hand as that worn by her sister when she disappeared here nine months ago.
Hoffman said the first clue to the skeletons tentative identification came from Harold Thacker, a retired Vallejo police sergeant and now a criminal investigator to Mare Island.
Hoffman said Thacker supplied the name of the missing Chinese girl after reading yesterdays Times-Herald a count of the discovery of the skeleton. Thacker told Hoffman’s he recalled talking to the missing girl’s father at Mare Island when he made inquiries at the shipyard after his daughter reportedly last had been seen there.
Hoffman siad a check of Police Department records uncovered a missing persons report involving Deana Hooper which had been filed by her siste in Vallejo. Police immediately contacted the sister with the result the first sad to the skeletons’ identity was developed.
Hoffman said confirmations of the identification rests with an examinations of the Sonoma’s girl’s dental charts which have been released by a Napa Dentist for checking with he skeleton’s teeth.
According to the missing person’s report filed last July by Mrs. Albright, Hoffman said her sister last had been seen on July 11 at the Enlisted Men’s CLub on Mare Island.
Hoffman said Mrs. Albright gave no reason reason for delaying the report of her sister’s disappearance until July 15th.
Hoffman said Deana Hooper and Tonna Albright had been adopted about eight years ago from an orphanage in Hong Kong by their foster father Dean Hooper a Caucasian ex-seviceman who now lives at 234 Thonison (?) Ave. Sonoma.
Hoffman said her notified Hooper that the skeleton found here had been tentatively identified as his missing adopted daughter. According to Hoffman, Hooper confirmed he had suspected all along that Deana was dad after she disappeared with a trace last July and that Mrs. Albright confirmation of the identifications of the skeleton came as no surprise to him.
Hoffman said it is his belief the skeletons found Tuesday by an Oakland chiropractor and his 8 year one son flying kites an the Azevedo Ranch had lain in the fired undetected since last July 12.
He indicated the location of the skeleton in high weeds 40 feet east of the neatest roadway would have made it virtually impossible for someone to see the remains unless a passerby stumbled by accident on that site.
Hoffman said the skeleton now is being examined by an anthropologist at the University of California at Davis in hope of determine the cause of the death .
Meanwhile, he said the police investigation into the girls’ disappearance and data is continuing.

Your welcome, glad I’m not a typist for a living. I type real fast…but did make a couple
small typo’s. I will be posting pictures also. This crime scene is St. John’s Mine Road and
Columbus Parkway. St. John’s Mine Road is a private road….but we had permission to go up
the road yesterday afternoon! It is beautiful open space, with some old ranches and houses.
The Swett Family lived there and Azezedo Family Ranch in the late 60’s, early 70’s.
If the kite flyers kite didn’t fall on the spot, this victim would still be missing. I will be posting
a picture of the spot that we feel the victim was found. Thanks to Lyndon Lafferty for inviting Sandy
and myself on a great field trip. We both took pictures so more to follow.
This is one picture….further up the Private Road.

Sandy & I first learned about Deana Hooper from Lyndon Lafferty.
Found on St. Johns Mines Road & Columbus Parkway.
Deana is in Lyndon’s Book, Page 280.
Here is the location where Sandy figured out Deana’s Body was left.
She was found by kite flyers. The location was in high weeds 40 feet
of the nearest roadway. It would of been impossible for someone to
find her unless passing by right at that spot as the kite flyers did.

I received a letter with a drawing , the letter mentioned a E Passion kite. I had no idea what that meant and asked for help from people on the Z sites. The letter was from my suspect giving clues to murders he was not accused of.
One of the girls he drew a picture of was Deana Hooper the other Jenny Lin 1994 Castro Valley, in Alameda county.
He drew himself with a crew cut ,between the two girls and his hands were pointing to a large newspaper.
I believe he was telling me that both of the victims had articles written about them? which I later found both did have articles written about their murders.
It was because of that letter with the drawing that Zam and I started to look into the Deana Hooper case. In the Sandy thread the letter was posted , not sure if photo shop removed it or not?
If my suspect is Zodiac, then he killed both girls and many more according to his messages. His last count on a murder map he sent was over 70 and that was in the 80’s when I received the murder map.
I noticed that on the day of Deana Hooper’s disappearance (July 11, 1974), the Vallejo Times Herald printed an article about the Zodiac’s "Badlands" and "Count Marco" letters.
If Z was in fact Deana’s killer, maybe he was riled by the slightly taunting tone of this article, which ends with Toschi saying, "He’s not fooling anybody."
Given the reports surrounding her death, it seems likely that Deana attended the reception in celebration of the arrival of the USS Wahoo and USS Thomas Jefferson at the at the Commissioned Officers’ Club on Mare Island on the night of the 11th. This was the last time she was seen. Here’s an article that explains the event and describes some of the attendees. I wonder whether the Mare Island Museum might have more photos or information.
Thank you for posting, I have never seen that article before.
May 8th 74 was the Badlands letter, the one that was closer to when she went missing was received on July 8th 74 , the Red Phantom letter. You may be correct and that caused Zodiac to start looking for another victim. Good information thank you.
I still find it more than a coincidence that about 30 yrs later, my suspect claimed to be her killer. I had never heard about her case until I received the letter and drawing of a victim with long dark hair holding a kite.
That was when I started asking everyone if they knew anything about a victim in relation to a kite?
It was a while before Zamantha and I talked to Lyndon about her in his book. (The book came out after I received the letter.)
My suspect had to remember Deana’s murder because he probably lived in Vallejo at that time and may be her killer.

Sorry if this has been asked before. I am reading a lot of posts on this forum. Some really fascinating stuff. Are you saying that The Zodiac didn’t stop killing when most people assume he did, and that he is responsible for this murder and for other ones as well? I apologize if this is common knowledge in the Z world.
