The Swindle case has striking similarities to the Domingos/Edwards case(which could certainly be the work of zodiac),and some elements of the Berryessa attack by Zodiac.

RE: John & Joyce Swindle shot on a beach in San Diego

Thought this couple deserved a thread of their own. Their murder happened in 1964,in San Diego. Their case has many overtones of both the Domingos/Edwards attack, and the Berryesa attack. I hope some others have some info to add to this.

Mapquest says that San Diego & Santa Barbara/Lompoc area or 3 hours apart. But right in the middle is Riverside, and I think most of would agree that Z was there in 66-67.

Interesting that a box of candy was found with the bodies. Not sure if it was carried by the victims or was some kind of calling card by the killer. Z never left calling cards, as far as I know..well maybe the watch at the Bates scene if he did that.

Then you have this article that states the similarities between the Domingos/Edwards murders and that of the Swindles

Hi folks My name Is Dan Scott of San Diego Haunted. Some residents of the Ocean Beach area believe that the ghost of Joyce Swindle is still present at her murder scene. Whether or not that is true or purely urban legend is yet to be determined. I want to offer a big thank you to the the site admin and others who have collected this information, making it a lot easier for me to put 2 and 2 together in a paranormal sense. Anyone that would like to read the paranormal -urban legend -speculation; feel free to visit http://www.sandiegohaunted.com/listings/san-diego/ocean-beach-ghost-of-joyce-swindle-and-the-zodiac-killer/

Pretty sold on this one being an early Zodiac. The killer even used a .22 calibre weapon, just like what happened at Santa Barbara and Lake Herman Road.

That bit about Joyce Swindle still haunting the spot where she died is tragic. I do wonder why Johnny is not with her, though.

Hi Dan,

Nice to see we help in other matters. I will check out your site, I do love a good ghost story. I’ve been party to a few myself, first hand and in the flesh, so to speak. I’ve seen things that paranormalists would kill for, again so to speak, to capture on camera. I am however the last guy you would want on a ghost hunt or maybe not, depends on what you are looking for. Proof of ghosts? nope not from me. Evidence of supernatural activity? That tree I can shake although I don’t tend to do much shaking, It’s more akin to a fist to the face.

He died at the hospital, not by her side. ;) I learned that from Dan’s site.

That’s absolutely heartbreaking – the notion that the couple may be bound to their respective places of death, unable to be with one another in the afterlife.

I’m a paranormal enthusiast, too, and a hopeless romantic.

I posted this in the "All You Have To Do Is Ask" thread in answer to a question that perplocator101 posed asking for the address that the Swindle’s were residing at when they were killed and I think it bears reposting here.

Perp, One of the articles about the Swindles quotes their landlady, Maria Smith. I looked up Maria Smith at Ancestry and was able to find her in a 1959 San Diego CA city directory.

She is listed as being connected to the Paradise Court Apartments. It gives two separate addresses, one that is quite a way from the beach area and the other is quite close to where the Swindle’s were killed. Looking on a Google map it does look to be a little further than 9 blocks but not by much and it could have been less built up then than it is today.

I’m thinking that Maria Smith managed both establishments.

I’m actually very surprised by the name of the apartments, Paradise Court!!!

Here’s some images.

The 1959 Directory listing.

I have a lot of questions if anyone doesn’t mind helping with.

About Johnny Ray, at age 19- how much time did he serve already in the navy or when he started in navy?

Navy he was attending was at Coronado COMNAVAIRPAC, NAS North Island San Diego?

I suppose the police reports are confidential or public? but nothing on the internet? or anyone have a copy? :D

Any better picture of Jonny and even Joyce? Like an actual photo for comparison too.

Reason I ask is My POI was in the navy here and has photo’s of friends/navy buddy’s, one picture resembles Johnny but I’m not sure for lack of comparison. Johnny’s height would help also

Re. the candy, was there anyplace they could have purchased it as the detectives speculated? From the pictures, this looks to be a residential area. There could have been a store within walking distance. What kind of candy was it? Did the store (if there was one) sell this candy and did they remember who they sold it to?

Was there any blood on the candy? If the Swindles purchased it, one of them had to be carrying it so it seems unlikely it could have ended up where it was unless the murderer removed it from them or wherever it would have landed after they were shot and placed it where it was found.
