Arthur leigh allen abbreviates California as " Calif." in handwriting exemplars on tom voights website. Zodiac does this in some of his letters when postmarking the letters. Is it possible Allen changed his handwriting drastically and did write the letters, it certainly would take the mystery out of the case, allen doesn’t strike me as what zodiac would look like, I wonder what you guys think. I couldnt find handwriting between allen and zodiac that were that similar but the abbreviating California was a similar quality.

Calif was pretty much the standard then.

–Just a heads-up. With posts like this, please put in the appropriate thread. This isn’t really "News Wire" material. I will move this to the thread on Allen. :)

Just to add to Tahoe’s post……

The two letter state designations did not come into being until July 1, 1963 when the zip code was introduced.

It took quite a few years for people to get the hang of writing the state as two letters and to use zip codes. If you recall the Jan. 29, 1974 Exorcist letter had some extras in the area where the stamp on an envelope is affixed. One of those things was a reminder stamp for people to use the zip codes. Even if you do not believe that the Exorcist letter was genuine the fact remains that people needed to be reminded and encouraged to use the zip codes. Old habits die hard!

I remember using "Calif" in the 80’s—–and others-I remember doing so as well.

One letter is misspelled as "Claif" as well…not "Calif" although I havent found any meaning for it. Maybe just writing in a hurry.
