I found a newspaper article that mentions Zodiac telling Bryan and Cecilia that he was "from Colorado and had escaped from Deer Lodge Prison in Montana." Has anyone else heard this before? Also, he didn’t actually say the name of the prison he supposedly escaped from did he?
A few minutes ago on a toilet not very far, far away….
Yes Colorado was mentioned in the police report, which was interesting regarding Tahoe’s discovery of the Holt comic, after all Fred Harman owned a ranch in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. No, Bryan never mentioned Deer Lodge off the bat, he was coaxed down that route by Sgt John Robertson in the bedside interview, so is a little questionable.

Thanks for the reply. I was just wondering because most people tend to focus on Deer Lodge. Interesting about Harman owning a ranch in Colorado.

Just sayin and it means not much ..but my poi grew up a cowboy spit away from Freddie’s ranch.
By the way that ranch in its day was in the middle of nowhere.
There are some close to the case that swear Zodiac did in fact say a place in CO,and not in MT

Yeah, I’ve heard rumors to that effect before.
Hard to tell. Thing is that White isn’t the most convincing witness out there – and the Colorado thing comes from him. Then again who’s to say that a groggy Hartnell’s "Montana" is any better than a shocked Hartnell’s "Colorado"? And I doubt that White lied about it – that would be insane. If it was Montana all along, White was simply mistaken – which Hartnell could have been, easily, too.
As for Deer Lodge, that was presented to him, as UKS says. What he actually remembered was more like "Fern Lock", it would seem.
thanks uk and norse. as soon as i saw this thread i thought ‘here we go again with the deer lodge business’. glad to see others reminding folks that hartnell never said deer lodge until coaxed by the cops.
Deer Lodge was an actual prison – in Montana. It was even a prison from which some convicts had escaped fairly recently. Fits very nicely, I don’t think anyone can deny that.
But the above doesn’t make the problems vanish. Bryan didn’t offer Deer Lodge himself. White claims he initially said Colorado. And it makes no less sense for Z to claim he was an escaped convict from Colorado. He didn’t even have to specify which prison he had escaped from:
As I’ve speculated before, he could have said he came from Fern Lake, Colorado, or something similar. A real town, or a generic town name, doesn’t matter. The main part of his story is that he’s an escaped convict. Precisely where he has escaped from is hardly important. Perhaps that was why Z got a bit frustrated (possibly) when Bryan asked him where it was he had escaped from again. He hesitated a bit, as though he couldn’t quite recall what he had said – and then repeated “Deer Lodge” as per the reconstruction of the dialogue. But that reconstruction was made after Robertson had concluded, on Bryan’s behalf, that it was Deer Lodge – and not Fern Ridge, or Pine Creek, or whatever.
I think what is clear, is that Bryan thought it was a two-part name like Deer lodge, Fern lake, etc. For what it’s worth, I don’t think there is even a Fern lake in CO,at least not a city or town, there is some sort of wilderness area with that name. Being that the Harmanson ranch stuff matches up with CO, it may be worth looking into. On a side note, ‘Zode’ had a Friend who had moved to Colorado. He told me that a long time ago, and I don’t remember the name he gave me. Since I have thought it’s possible that somebody stole Zode’s name persona, maybe I should call him and check that name out again

Oakalla Prison Farm (Burnaby, British Columbia, next to Deer Lake) had inmates who jokingly called it "Deer Lake Lodge."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakalla_Prison
I could imagine the "kalla" of "Oakalla" getting remembered as "Colorado" in the mind of a terrified person who’d never heard of it. Maybe "farm" could even get twisted into "fern." (A long shot, I know.)
For what it’s worth, the reason I looked into "Deer Lake Lodge" in the first place is because it’s mentioned in this police interview:

I thought the addition of "lake" was strange, as the name of the prison the interviewee is referring to is Deer Lodge (in Montana).
