This same picture of Cecelia was in a Santa Rosa Press Democrat article written about the attack. The articles published by that paper on the LB attack are here-
interesting that narlow initially said they were in their car.
Oh well, I looked at dozens of LB articles and somehow missed that one.
The car bit reminds me of the BRS articles that said Zodiac opened the door before firing. Wonder if it was misreporting or if Narlow was holding back.

it seems like if anyone would know how it happened, it would be one of the main detectives on the case. the entire crime scene was supposedly near the shore, 1/4 mi from their car. i don’t know how that would have been mixed up in the retelling, other than maybe the reporter interviewed him while they were processing the car and made the assumption.
Just a case of sloppy journalism, I think.
Other papers reported the true crime scene as early as the following day (the Sunday edition of the Vallejo Times Herald covered the attack extensively and got their basic facts straight).
The only thing held back, AFAIK, was the "by knife" addendum on the car door.
Bryan did say in an old interview that he was asked to keep parts of his conversation with Z to himself. The papers reported the whole "escaped convict from Deer Lodge" story, and there’s an interview where Bryan mentioned his offer of help and that he initially refused to lie down. I haven’t (yet) come across Bryan asking if Z’s gun was loaded.
Loads of distortion in the reporting of this case. I know some of it originated with Ranger White…another weird bit I noticed in regards to the famously botched palmprint from the phone: "Capt. Don Townsend said, "It was very, very heartily done by our criminalist Hal Snook and we’re very pleased with the results.’ He did not elaborate." Sarcasm?

or maybe they do have a palm print and faked the botched part to throw z off? yeesh, absolutely nothing about any of these crimes is known for sure.
I don’t put a lot into the newspaper articles. They are interesting for various reasons, but many times report bogus information. Whether bad reporting or misinformation from whomever provided it.
It’s amazing how inaccurate many of the papers are. Hardly a single article published about the Z case without some inaccuracy or basic error, like the misspelling of victims’ names.
