In the vein of following up on the True Crime claim about a Patton State patient claiming her death I dug around a little bit for reports on anything that went down in Patton in the next couple months. There was a murder at Patton in that month and another that was a suspected murder.
The 12/16/66 San Bernardino Sun newspaper has an article on the murder of Florence Andenberg (44) shot once with a .32 in the back. No robbery or rape. She was, however, staged with a sweater folded under her head as a pillow and arms folded neatly over her body. She was hidden under "boughs of a tree". They surmised she had been killed on 11/30 because she didn’t show up for a party then.
The 11/29/66 San Bernardino Sun reports a more grizzly scene. A Patton patient’s decayed body was found 4 miles north in Sand Creek Canyon sans head, arms, and legs below the knees. Animal’s molested the body but it seems that authorities didn’t pin the missing limbs on them. 6 white poker chips (which were apparently used by Patton as tokens for good behavior) were found near the body. That tidbit may have contributed to the authorities thinking it could be murder.
