The murderer of Cheri Bates may or may not have written the morbid poem found on the bottom of a library desk. (Was the desk a fold-open one, or solid)? Certainly, however, males, especially RCC students, with the initials RH should be checked out. Unfortunately, the law forbids RCC from divulging personal info to civilians. As readers of this forum know, my "POI"’s initials are RH; he was a senior at RHS when Cheri was a freshman; and his girlfriend, later wife, lived right around the corner from Bates.

It’s certainly possible that there were two different men with similar descriptions doing suspicious things at Lake Beryessa that day, despite the low number of entries into the park.

It’s certainly possible that CJB was killed by someone who wasn’t Zodiac but left a military footprint, and that Zodiac didn’t write the poem, and Zodiac didn’t write the letters, and that the state’s chief handwriting expert is wrong to say he did.

But I think it’s clear in which direction I would bet money if I had to.

I think it’s plausible to consider the poem from a bunch of different angles. I’m not sure, however, how anyone can confidently take any interpretation completely off the table in regards to what it was trying to convey. The more salient points about its existence to me are that: 1) It was written on the underside of the table and found in storage so someone had to have access to it that could make that happen and 2) It was found in a location close to where CJB was murdered and it seems the library location itself was tied into her death and 3) It was the opinion of Sherwood Morrill that the writing matched the Zodiac. I often wonder about how and why the poem was written on the underside of the table.

Yes, it would help a lot to know exactly what kind of desk it was and exactly where it was found and if
it was reasonably possible to write a fairly extensive poem in a library/classroom setting without flipping
the desk upside down.

Stray thought from today ….. one thing that we can say about this ….. this clearly isn’t a beginner’s poem. Too sophisticated stylistically. I would say that whoever wrote the poem had written enough poetry, or at least literature, for someone to have noticed that he was a writer.

I am a college English professor. I see these types of poems all the time. While it may not be a beginner, it isn’t particularly sophisticated. Any first or second year college English major could write something similar.

It’s important to note that we have no idea when this poem was written on the desk. It could have been 1966. Could have been 1956. We just don’t know.

There is so little to connect this poem to CJB or Zodiac, that I don’t quite understand everyone’s interest in it.

Back to the ‘curly’ F issue. Also compare the ‘illi’ section – very much alike.

I’m going to do a bit of a 180 here. I’ve been thinking about what I said about the ubiquity of graffiti in schools and whilst I’m not back pedaling on that, I suppose I have to give some credit to the original investigators. Surely they would have only taken the desk into evidence if they had good reason to think the graffiti was relatively fresh and somewhat unusual at the time. So maybe the desks were relatively new, or the janitor cleaned under them regularly and maybe graffitiing desks wasn’t quite so common in the 60’s. Whatever the reason/s I have to believe that the desks at the Riverside library did not normally resemble those found in a modern middle school.

An obvious suspect would be a library janitor with the initials RH.

I agree. Also, this poem is very obviously about suicide and not murder. So, if it was written by The Zodiac, then we need to consider that the Zodiac was a) a woman and b) suicidal at some point.

That’s why opinions on what writing means don’t matter. A lot of people think it sounds like suicide, a lot think it sounds like a dark and morbid poem about murder. I personally don’t think it’s about suicide, but that does not matter, what matters is that it’s considered evidence that Zodiac wrote it. Hopefully if he’s still alive and arrested, he can tell us what he meant
