So why would an unknown killer use the nth generation copies to hide the characteristics of his typewriter???
That’s the clue, he had a typewriter, used it often, and knew it could be traced.
He’s a writer.

He’s a writer.
Or he used to work at the Enterprise, the post office etc..it’s true, using a typewriter required some skills..no backspace and loose bands between those little hammers and your piece of paper..

*ZODIACHRONOLOGY*
I still don’t think that the same man wrote the Confession Letter and the Bates Had to Die letters.

I tend to agree.
I believe it’s the same person, The Zodiac. The confession letter was typed, with what police believed to be only information the killer could have known. Then Three letters were sent, and one directly to her father at their house on Via San Jose with She Had To Die written on it. Taunting police & her father. How evil would you have to be, if you weren’t the killer/author of the confession letter, to send the other letters?

Extremely evil.
Evil enough to also be a killer.
I believe Cheri’s killer sent the typed confession, but the handwritten notes were the work of another miscreant who did not kill Cheri, and would later become known as the Zodiac.
Some people can be evil. Evil, cruel, crazy, angry. You name it. We see it every day. Some people just want to be part of the crazy.
I believe the Zodiac wrote the letter and typed the confession. However, given the Zodiac’s long writing career, I would be more inclined to dismiss the typed letter and contribute it to another.

I believe Sherwood Morrill confirmed the handwriting on the envelope that the typed confession letter came in was
Zodiac’s handwriting ???

This is utterly new to me.
The only Riverside documents that I recall Morrill confirming as Zodiac’s work were the three Bates Had to Die letters and the desktop poem.

My understanding is that Morrill confirmed all of the Bates case writings including the envelopes as Z’s handwriting.
I never read anywhere that Morrill confirmed all the Bates case writings EXCEPT for the confession letter envelope.
I don’t remember seeing he confirmed the envelope on the confession letter, it’s certainly a different style of printing, maybe a marker…but looking at it I think it is.

From Jake Wark’s Zodiac site:
"A November 1970 examination by Sherwood Morrill, the state’s Chief Examiner of Questioned Documents, indicated that the author known as the Zodiac had written the poem as well as the "Bates Had to Die" notes, but no such finding was made on the typed "Confession" letters’ envelopes."
