Mageau says he had to reach outside the car door to open it to get out because the inside handle was broken. He says he then fell on the ground as he exited. The front passenger door was found open, not the rear one. A broken handle could be verified, but I have see no mention of it in the police report. Logically, it would have been the front passenger door’s handle, possibly broken in the panic.
When you read the actual police report, it does not say that Mageau claims to have managed to make his way on the backseat, only that he attempted to. Considering the front passenger door was found opened, it would imply that indeed he remained on the front and exited by that door. Which means he never ended up trashing around on the backseat like the Zodiac claims, rather this is another indication the Zodiac misunderstood what he read in the police report.
Also, if the Zodiac came back to shoot at Mageau and Darlene again, after Mageau had made his way on the backseat, it would be odd that the Zodiac would have fired at Mageau diagonally from the front instead of through the rear window.
If anyone has information that would point to Mageau actually ending up on the backseat, please provide it.
Back then whiplash was a common injury in car accidents because they didn’t usually have headrests and the front seats would only go halfway up your back.
It also explains why from behind he could see where the female and male were sitting.

It’s true the backseats were low, it doesn’t explain how Mageau could have ended up on the back from being in a sitting position as he gets shot at, and then came back to the front to exit the vehicle. Unless you are saying he actually exited from the rear, in which case how did he reach the handle? He lowered the window? As far as I know only the front windows were found lowered.
I’m still going through the case files, hopefully I’ll find something about the broken door handle.
It’s a two door car. 1963 Chevrolet Corvair.
Mageau said that both he are Darlene thought the guy was a cop. That is why he was getting his wallet out and ID ready. He was shot in the head, through the cheeks and tongue. The Zodiac went around to Darlene Ferrin’s driver side and started to shoot her. Mageau seems to have gone into the back seat at some point to avoid being hit. While crying out for help the Zodiac came back and leaned in the window and shot him more times again. That is why shells were found inside the car.
Seems to me this attack probably lasted a minute tops.
Humans can do all sorts of things when adrenaline starts pumping. He could probably haul himself into the backseat in a split second. Shock. He seems to display quite a bit of PTSD in the documentary "This is the Zodiac Speaking" as he recounts the incident. It’s called the flight or fight response. When trapped the body’s pent up energy to escape also gets trapped. That is why he is rocking back and forth when he thinks back to the incident. He is waiting to spring out of it and run off. He could do with some somatic experiencing therapy IMO.

Ah obvious now looking at the car. That means he had to get back in the front no matter what. Seems it checks out.
