I am reading the yellow book for the first time and really enjoying it. I came on here to check for some more details on the case and nobody here seems to be talking about the car chase?

Im aware some things in this book turned out not to be true, is this the case with the supposed car chase?

"Darlene stopped in front of the house, turned off the engine, and waited. In a moment mike rushed out in such a hurry that he left all the lights blazing, the door standing open and the television playing" [This struck me as we very odd, what was the major rush?]

"In the drivers seat, Darlene started the ignition and gestured impatiently for Mike to get in. As the bronze Corvair pulled off, they were trailed immediately by a light colored car that had been parked in the shadows of the tree-lined street. "We’re being followed" Mike said. Darlene sped off to Oakwood, took a right on Springs Road, and started out toward Columbus Parkway, the same direction as Lake Herman Road.

It was 11.55pm now.

The car raced behind them at high speed. Darlene kept turning to lose the stranger, she began going down side streets, but the car behind followed closer and faster.

Mike kept telling her, "oh, no, no, no ,no go straight….go straight!" Finally Mike said "just go this way" With the other car in hot pursuit, they were being chased inexorably towards the outskirts of the city."

After this they end up in the parking lot and you know the rest. So my question is, did this happen or not? I read the police report and when they were questioning mike he never mentioned anything about a car chase. Can anyone help me out with some more information?

Going by memory, it seems that incident was sort of a "this is what may have happened next" scenario. Graysmith trying to explain the fast travel time. I don’t think it actually happened.

This is from Lyndon Lafferty’s book…according to him, Mageau first told the "chase" version of the story while he was still in the hospital, though Lafferty’s account doesn’t include the same details.

Thanks for the info guys. If that is true that Mike said to a friend that Darlene definitely knew the killer, that is huge isn’t it?

It would be huge if it were true but what would be the point of Mageau keeping it to himself after all these years? If Mageau did think that he knew who Zodiac was it’s more likely that he did tell LE at some point and whoever he thought it was just didn’t pan out after being investigated.

Or perhaps he knew the people responsible for her death, but also knew that if he revealed who the killer was that there would be repercussions for him or his family. That is a very possible scenario. It would also explain why he went off the map after Darlene’s murder.

Well, if he revealed who killed Darlene and he was correct then don’t you think that person would have been arrested, thus minimizing the threat? If he was wrong then why would there be any harm to him or his family?

Mageau has been in enough trouble with the law over the years that he could have used his supposed knowledge of who the killer was as a get out of jail free card but apparently that’s never happened.

That would be true if the threat was from just one man. However if the decision to have her killed was made by a group of people, perhaps drug related, perhaps she knew too much, then revealing the man who killed her would put Mike and his family in danger whether the killer was locked up or not.

As for him being in trouble with the law, unless he was facing the death penalty, revealing the killers identity simply wouldn’t be worth the risk to him and family.

Seems as if Mageau would be in danger anyway though. Better to say something than not. He had family to be concerned about too. I think, after all this time, he would have said something had he known who it was.

A car chase prior to the night’s events is possible, but tough to prove at this point. Either way, my money’s on the fact that MM doesn’t know who the killer is. He probably wasn’t tracking every detail leading up to the shooting, and his description of the shooter isn’t the most illustrative (which is understandable). If he had prior contact, it might have been more detailed.

The issue here is,Mageau has been very back and forth over the years and does not seem reliable as a witness and there’s no mention of a chase in the initial report
