gluckman–

You are not the first to suggest such an outcome.

I just don’t think that to be the case.

Donna talked to complete strangers about looking forward to winter and the ski season, as well as telling that to her good friend whom she was to meet for the weekend. She had just purchased a car she loved…and left behind and rented a new apartment.

She was a grown woman, with a good career and didn’t have reason to run away from family–who lived half a country away.

The argument against a voluntary disappearance stems from the insistence of Donna’s family and friends that she had no discord with any of them – that she was a happy, well-integrated young woman, with no reason to cut and run.

Of course, she could have nursed a secret grudge against someone we’re unaware about, and acted on it by running away, but my gut feeling is that wherever she is, she is not where trouble melts like lemon drops high above the chimney tops.

If Donna was mixed up with "the wrong crowd" which lead to personal problems,I could see her vanishing of her own free will. But, as was was just mentioned in the last couple posts, she had a new job, car, apartment, etc. There were no indications about Family issues,Financial issues, drugs, etc. Everything was looking up. Telling people she was looking forward to skiing, etc. A sign of somebody withdrawling or considering harming themselves would be missing work, not talking to people, not paying their bills, etc. I agree with the majority here,Donna met with foul play.

Hi Everybody,

Thanks to all of you for the replies. Yes, I think you are right. The new apartment and new car make it seem highly unlikely that Donna Lass was planning to runaway. But, what about her making a sudden, spur-of-the-moment decision? Any thoughts on that?

For my part, I could imagine at least one reasonable scenario that might make a respected young woman choose to disappear. Not to say that my scenario has any substance to it–just to say that a scenario of that type does not seem inconceivable to me.

I apologize for the possibly wacky questions. The reason I am asking is that I am curious about a fascinating link that was brought to my attention recently:

http://zodiackiller.fr.yuku.com/topic/3467#.UhVjBMu9KSM

There was some amazing analysis done in that thread, and I have been wondering if there is still more to learn from all of it. I have been trying to figure if there could possibly be some connection between the two Donna L’s in that strange episode. One thought was that the two DLs might be one and the same.

Your thoughts are most welcome, as always,

G

TBH G,

As far as I can tell from reading those posts, the person responsible for sending the card was influenced by the movie (As pointed out by Tom), did a little research, found out about DL, realised the name was similar to her daughter’s and that further bolstered their own imagined mental connection. People communicate in lots of different ways and it seems that this lady thought that by adding her spin on spirituality along with Z stuff to the communications might in some way add a conveyance of comfort/importance/explanation/direction. Not appreciating of course that these kind of weird, cryptic communications were indicative of the possible responsible in this case and could cause offence/confusion.

Some smart cookies amongst those posters, I wonder where they are now. Oh wait, they are still among us. ;)

Hi traveller1st,

That definitely is a very good possible explanation.

It still leaves me thirsty, however.

Of course, I don’t always have the common sense to stop at the answers. :)

Per Howard, it will be up & running soon. Howard does have some excellent research on his site.

I have what appears to be a nice, crisp scan of the Christmas card… but I can’t remember where the heck I got it or if it’s even legit. May have even gotten it from this forum for all I know. Any thoughts as to its authenticity?

Thanks up2something!

That is a nice copy, but I too have know idea where it came from. Looks legit to me.

As with a lot of things, it’s all just a guess as to who this was from.

Bentley pointed out that "airmail" would have required more postage, so 2 stamps was a must.

Considering this was a Christmas card, FOUR years after Donna’s disappearance, I have to wonder if it might have simply been from a friend of Donna’s who was thinking about her during the holidays as this particular card certainly wasn’t to instill fear, but to simply wish Mary the best.

If you read it as being sent from Zodiac, it comes across creepy. If you read it as from a caring, religous individual, it comes across entirely different.

The card, envelope and a narrative by Howard can be seen at the web archive here-

http://www.thezodiacmansonconnection.com/74_christmas_card.htm l”> http://web.archive.org/web/200812122300 … _card.html

In the narrative Howard says the following:

IF the envelope is postmarked 940 it was not sent from Alameda County but from San Mateo County. The first three digits of the zip code denote the sectional center facility which is where the mail was sorted and postmarked. The sectional center facility codes were assigned July 1, 1963 as the first stage in implementing the five digit zip codes. They did not switch the codes around. Once they were assigned it was a done deal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZIP_code

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sectional_center_facility

The sender mailed the card from a zip code that started with 940 and it was routed to the sectional center facility or distribution center for zip codes beginning with 940 to be postmarked.

The sectional center facility code for Alameda county is 945.

The 940 sectional center facility is in San Mateo county, which includes the city of South San Francisco.

Interesting Seagull. Thank you…very informative. You are correct!

I tried to enhance the postal code. We can see it is "940". Something else caught my eye though. The date doesn’t appear to be 1974, but "1970". While the last digit is difficult to read, I would say it is clearly not a "4" as it is shown in "940".
