Has LE every given out how many people came in and confessed that they were the "Zodiac"? I know when it was happening the papers at the time, said that LE were getting lots of people confessing that they were him, and were let go shortly after, for not being credible.

I am not talking about others accusing someone of it. Just those confessor types!

A couple I know of, Richard Howard Michael, actually looked a bit like the sketch, and lived in the SF area, He claimed he was zodiac, and killed his Family, before dying himself in a confrontation with police. You can search RICHARD HOWARD MICHAEL, there is a thread around here on this site.

An older man, who was an arsonist in NY, and set fire to a church, also claimed he was Zodiac, sorry I forget his name.

Lastly, in the suspects section, there is a guy named ‘ZODE’, in the Robert Graysmith book, he wrote that Zode went to Pacific HS in the mid 1960’s, in San Bernardino, and that he called himself ZODIAC, and used to say, ‘This is the Zodiac speaking’……I contacted Zode, several times, and he admitted pretty much that most of this was true. For reasons you will see if you read the thread, I don’t think he was Zodiac, but have a theory that one of his classmates may have been, and went on to steal Zode’s ‘character’ or ‘persona’

Also David Martin claimed to be Zodiac. There is an article about him here-

It’s the Nov. 22, 1969 article.

Good question/thread mhoward48.

Here is the thread on "Richard Howard Michael". (howardm…lol)

I was getting him confused with David Martin.

…they may be dealing with one or more ersatz Zodiacs–other psychotics eager to get into the act, or perhaps even other murderers eager to lay their crimes at the real Zodiac’s doorstep. L.A. Times, 1969

Louie Myers from Vallejo, told two people (probably more!) that he was the Zodiac Killer.

If Zodiac ever joined a Z forum, I’m sure he would have been banned for not following forum rules. Zam’s/Quote

David Carpenter, the Trailside Killer, also told fellow escapees that he was the Zodiac Killer. So many Zodiacs, so little time. ;) Then we have several people who either adopted the persona of Zodiac (Heriberto Seda, the "New York Zodiac") or pretended to be Zodiac while committing other crimes (the 2008 "Fayetteville" Zodiac murder of Meghan Touma). I’m convinced that far more people have been killed by Zodiac wannabes and imposters over the years than by Zodiac himself.

I’m not sure "Zode" really fits the bill, however, because he simply used the name "Zodiac" rather than claiming to be Zodiac.

Any source for that David Carpenter quote? I don’t doubt you, but I’d love to read about it. I heard that he was a Z suspect and never knew why.

Any source for that David Carpenter quote? I don’t doubt you, but I’d love to read about it. I heard that he was a Z suspect and never knew why.

The citation is from "The Sleeping Lady", a book about the Trailside murders around Mt. Tamalpais written by some guy named Robert Graysmith.

Carpenter was incarcerated at the Calaveras County Jail on kidnapping and rape charges when he led an escape attempt with four other prisoners on 4/27/70.

"After the break the prisoners huddled together in a wheat field. At this point Carpenter told the other men some astonishing information. "I am", he proudly stated, "The Zodiac Killer."

The others escapees apparently didn’t believe him. They were all captured rather quickly and Carpenter spent almost a decade in prison before eventually becoming the Trailside Killer.

Zodiac was publicly speculated to possibly be involved in the Trailside Killings as well and early photos of Carpenter (as opposed to the balding Trailside mugshot) are actually passable for Zodiac. I’m not suggesting him as real suspect, I just find the coincidences intriguing.

Weird Zynchronicity… Carpenter lived with his parents just a few houses away or 150 feet from my own Zodiac POI on the same street in San Francisco. Weird…
