I heard on TV yesterday that Rolling Stone Magazine was defending it’s recent cover with the remaining Boston Marathon bombing suspect, by saying they have had covers with other high profile criminals including the boston strangler ,manson and the Zodiac killer. Anyone got a copy of it?

I don’t think they even had a Zodiac story in any issue, Manson probably had a cover and many stories.

The Manson issue was #61 so i’d think it was around there I heard it on CBS ,pretty sure my ears are set to a zodiac killer alert.
some where there must be a every issue listing if not photo
maybe a split cover like the Peter Frampton below the SLA was not as big as Z

Not sure how good this list is (Wiki), but they list the covers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_pe … ling_Stone

…they may be dealing with one or more ersatz Zodiacs–other psychotics eager to get into the act, or perhaps even other murderers eager to lay their crimes at the real Zodiac’s doorstep. L.A. Times, 1969

I can’t find anything on this. The cover for Oct. sixty nine was David Crosby, November sixty nine was The Beatles. November ’70 was Grace Slick, and April ’78 was Brooke Sheilds. Those are the only dates that I can think of where Zodiac would be in the major news, if ever.

I’m pretty sure they never had a cover for the Hillside Stranglers either.

Since I put in all this work for nothing, here’s a pretty cool site that has a lot of the covers, but it doesn’t have the Manson one.

Ps. I’m almost positive that there is a book of all the RS covers and I know someone who has it, but I’m not going to call them and ask. Sorry.

I contacted the proprietor of http://www.rockpaper.net/. He said he could not locate any Zodiac Killer entries in his database of Rolling Stone back issues.

I would have to think we would have seen by now, a Rolling Stone issue if Z was on it

Kind of hard to beleive they didn’t have at least a article on z. They got off the music focus alot .
O’well I guess it is the 1st time the media was wrong in reporting.

Maybe it was just a review of the Zodiac movie.

Bummer. I was hoping they had his photo on a cover. That would have gone a long way in closing this case.

I looked last night and only found the Manson cover. As per other’s looking it certainly appears, no Zodiac one. Here’s the Manson one FWIW.

Here is a news site that mentions them reporting on all 3 (at the bottom) ? I heard it on the CBS evening news, Pelley I think.

Mass killers and serial killers have been no exception. Rolling Stone and others have reported long and hard on the Boston Strangler, the Night Stalker, the Hillside Strangler, the Zodiac Killer and many more, with some of these newspaper and magazine stories ending up as books and movies that many protested glamorized the sick killers.

There’s the important bit – "and others and have reported" so that’s not specifically Rolling Stone nor is it necessarily a cover nor is it necessarily Zodiac. It’s any mention of any serial killer in any magazine.

RS did a story about Ted Bundy but he wasn’t on the cover, just a blurb about the story was on the cover. Unsolved murders are just not as appealing to publishers as a suspect that has been arrested. They like to bring the stories around, full circle.

Here’s the Bundy "cover", Dec. 1978-

This one happens to be for sale right now at eBay.
