If the case has been solved, what could be the reasons for the Zodiac’s name not to be disclosed?

There are survivors and family members of victims out there. The murders are open cases until formally decided otherwise. The name of an assumed perpetrator can’t just be blurted out without prior warning.

Solved does not mean that it is confirmed. See my post above. If they have managed to eliminate all suspects except one who are related to the same relatives that Zodiac has, then they can feel confident that person is Zodiac. Until they find that person to obtain DNA for confirmatory testing, they would probably avoid a public proclamation for legal liability reasons.

I’ve been doing criminal defense work as a lawyer for the better part of two decades. I have seen innumerable cases wherein law enforcement "knows" who committed the crime. For various reasons, though, they can’t make the case officially. I have one case where the State knew my client was guilty of a murder because of the evidence they seized when they burglarized his home and searched it. All of that evidence was inadmissible at a criminal trial (and to be precise, they couldn’t backdoor it with inevitable discovery doctrine, etc.). So he was never prosecuted. I can think of literally dozens of reasons they "know" who Zodiac is and dozens of reasons why they can’t claimed it is "solved."

I’ve been saying all along, even if they develop a full DNA profile from a letter and match that DNA to someone, that will not automatically mean an arrest.

If the DNA comes back to someone, LE, news, etc. who had reason to handle that particular letter that could be contamination. If the DNA comes back to some rank stranger, or even a known suspect, all that will really prove is that person wrote that letter. That doesn’t prove they murdered anyone.

They’ll likely need actual proof they were the murderer too, hopefully with some solid evidence they find, once they get a name, or a lot of strong circumstantial evidence.

A DA is going to want a very strong case if they charge someone with being the Zodaic.

Unless Zodiac is dead. If the case is “solved”, assuming through DNA, and no arrest is made, then we should assume the person is no longer alive. There’s no point in building a case against a dead man.

On the other hand, if Zodiac is dead, then why wait to announce it?

The biggest clue is the late 2017 "new round" of testing and now it is late 2020.

What if the DNA comes back to some high man (DOA) at the government/FBI/CIA/NSA/etc… who if scrutinized to a thorough investigation may reveal very sensitive information that is still held back to this day?

Multiple jurisdictions etc.

Possible translation: Bureaucratic hoops that must be jumped through, dotting of i’s, crossing of z’s, etc.

Hopefully we can all find out who it is soon.

I’m guessing it’s someone that’s dead.

I hope we also are able to learn what the methodology was – from which letters or evidence the DNA was collected, whether it was confirmed against samples from other letters, etc. If they used DNA from the CJB crime scene to identify her killer, and then said they believe that guy was Zodiac, based on handwriting and little else, for instance, that would be pretty thin.

With all the hoax and copycat letters, the possibility different killers were responsible for CJB, the shootings (LHR, BRS, PH), and the stabbing at LB, the methodology in naming a definitive Zodiac suspect could and should be very complex; way more so than simply announcing a name.

If dead, most likely, I am sure there are hoops to jump through in order to exhume the body for confirmation.

A couple days ago, I Got some really detailed info about the DNA work going on behind the scenes from an inside source. It’s encouraging but I think there is much more work to be done. Fingers crossed

That’s good news, Morf. Could this mean they’ll have to build a family tree as they did with GSK?
