That’s horrific. Poor family, I bet they didn’t want to change their number just in case the calls led to their daughter eventually.
The Long Island Serial Killer also tormented one of his victim’s mother with calls from the victim’s mobile phone. He did this from a highly populated part of Manhattan and never stayed on long enough for police to narrow it down much further, so even now days some sick person could get away with this kind of mental torture for a long time if they played safe. Scary.

It was actually victim Melissa Barthelemy’s sister Amanda who received the phone calls. Strange that the killer didn’t exhibit the same post-offense behavior in any of the other murders but then again, Barthelemy didn’t quite fit the same victim profile as the rest of the girls, who worked as internet escorts while Melissa worked the streets near Times Square.

When a trap is put on a phone to catch these jerks , they know that the traps don’t work unless they use the same phone to call from at least 3 times, so they call from different phones. I know because I have had at least 20 traps put on my phone over many yrs. ID machines won’t always show the name or number either.( I was one of the first in line to have that machine) I was able to get the prefix and the first 3 numbers of the caller, which did help somewhat, because it came from the area where I felt the suspect lived at that time.

If the police are in your home with a tracing machine, the caller has to stay on the phone long enough to be traced. That was tried on the Jim Dunbar show with calls coming for someone who clamed to be Zodiac. The caller did not stay on long enough for a trace.
