Hi,
I had an amusing thought today: What if we assigned names to serial killers the way we assign names to hurricanes?
One advantage of this scheme is that serial killers could not give themselves cool names (like "The Zodiac").
Maybe some of them wouldn’t bother if they thought they were going to get a stupid name like:
A – Applesauce assassin
B – Bumwipe beast
C – Cauiliflower killer
And so on.
Feel free to improve on the names. I need sleep.
Best,
G
The press seems to be the ones that name the serial killers. They tried like heck to call the Zodiac "The Code Killer" but Zodiac would not abide. He is unique in so many ways. Off the top of my head I don’t recall another serial killer that named themselves. There must be another just can’t who that might be.
So perhaps you should alert the press about your idea.

David Berkowitz/Son of Sam
BTK named himself, too.
Trivialising events surrounding murders? Hmmmm.
G. – you need sleep!

What do you suppose would have happened if all the letters Z saw published were first edited to read "This is the Zucchini speaking…"?
Don’t you think that would have changed the game a little?
What about "This is the Zucchini Muffin speaking…"?
Mind you, these were the sixties…
Hey, Z! We know you are out there and we need your expertise. Would this have affected your reign of terror in any way?
Thanks in advance,
G
P.S.: Of course, what about years later. Would any of us spend all our free time on a website called www.zucchinimuffinkillersite.com? Sleep apnea is a serious problem.
I do think you have a point, as twisted as it is. Giving these creeps fancy names, especially the ones they choose just gives them the attention they want so bad.
Sure the media has a responsibility to keep the public informed, public safety concerns, blah blah blah. We know they love the ratings they get from these stories.
They should call them "The killer of Jane Doe, John Smith, etc." Or something to that effect. I admit that I’m just as guilty as everyone else, I know a score of super villain serial killers and their life stories and I don’t know a single one of their victims. It’s sick that these guys get preserved in the history books and the people who touched others lives in ways beyond destruction are forgotten.

Actually, the irony is that a good number of these people, such as Jack the Ripper’s victims or those of Green River Gary, would not have been remembered at all were it not for being murdered.
I’m not sure what you mean by that statement Nach.
Well I know what you mean, but to me that kind of implies that they didn’t matter. Most normal people that just live their lives won’t make a mark on a large group of strangers, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t matter to the people who knew them. It’s not true, like Z wrote, that they are people who will never be missed.
All of JTR’s victims had people who noticed their absence and tried to give helpful information to the police, I’m sure that it was the same for the GRK. Precisely because they were part of a maligned and at risk social class they had a network of people who looked out for each other. And I know that there were victims family members that continued to keep pushing the police to solve the GRK murders decades later and not just letting it move on.
