Ties him how?
Tom was apparently told by Dave Toschi about something "extremely gross" contained in the Halloween card that linked Zodiac to the Bennallack case.
I believe you’re thinking of Sandy Betts. My info is similar but didn’t come from Toschi. Toschi and I mostly discussed Leigh Allen. That was back in 1998.
Regarding an insurance scam: I’d be surprised if Kathy’s car was insured. Such laws were much less strict back then, and she was not exactly a mainstream person.

Tom, did the Halloween Card mention Nancy by name? Have you seen enough evidence to convince you that Zodiac killed Nancy? Also, what was the most interesting thing that Dave Toschi told you in your conversations with him?
In regards to Kathleen Johns, it’s hard to believe that she would go through all of that for an insurance scam. The cops said that she might have done it to make her husband feel sorry for her. I don’t believe that either. She could have just told him she had a sprained ankle or something if she wanted him to feel sorry for her.
I don’t want to sidetrack this discussion with Halloween card stuff, but no there is no direct mention of Nancy in that correspondence. PM me if you’d like.
Regarding Johns…I’d never heard of the husband/sympathy angle before. Where’d that originate?
When I was in contact with Kathy she was married to an inmate. Not sure for how long, though. After her gig on "America’s Most Wanted" in 1998ish she had made me her booking agent, it was shortly before she died. Instead of a flight, she had been booked to take a train which is not at all preferred. However, I was told her bar bill cost more than most intercontinental flights. I’m sharing that because I knew Kathy well enough to know it would be ok
Tom, it’s from the documentary His Name Was Arthur Leigh Allen.
George Bawart – "She had a boyfriend at the time and she wanted him to feel sorry for her. But that’s only my guess. It could have been true. But something just doesn’t feel right about it".

Are you sure that was about Kathy? I think Bawart was confused.
Here’s the video.
Yeah, he was confused. That’s George…he thought the Riverside writer was calling himself "Enterprise" when that was actually the name of the newspaper he was writing to.

Same day the Halloween Card was Postmarked. Nancy Bennallack Article on Pg. 14 and the rare phrase "Why Spoil the Game"
Interesting, but "Why spoil the Game" was part of the Halloween card if I am not mistaken, Zodiac did not add that, so if he was inspired by the phrase in the paper it would be a miracle he found a Halloween card with the same phrase. May be just a coincidence

It was reported in the newspapers, the Halloween card was made from several different Children Halloween Cards. Maybe he was a greeting card enthusiast and had a whole stash of cards? I’m not 100 percent sure "Why the Spoil the Game" was already on the card.
A couple of other things from the same newspaper. Wells Twombly (Famous Sports Writer) for the Examiner quoted Lee Trevino saying "Why Spoil the Game’ in his article "Instant Fame". Examiner and Chron were basically in the same building in 1970. I think Twombly could be the only writer at the Examiner or Chron with the LY at the end of their name like Zodiac spelled AverLY. On the same page, there are a pair of dice inside eyes with 13 dots showing. Like from the card, Paradice and the 13 eyes. Combined.
Just to Clarify. I’m not suggesting that Wells Twombly was the Zodiac or he mailed the Halloween Card. Paul Avery was accused of mailing Zodiac letters.
the Halloween card was made from several different Children Halloween Cards.
Some of Zodiac’s messages were composed on a specific type of paper that he obviously sought out. Probably the shop where he liked to buy fancy stationary had a wide selection of cards for is collage?
So he liked stationary and had a amateur sewing hobby on the side.
That was too much!
