Could the Pines card be a hint to a previous murder of Elizabeth “Betty-Lou” Ernstein? She was seemingly murdered on March 19th 1968 and buried in a shallow grave amongst pine trees by snowy ski slopes called Big Pines. The perp seemingly taunted her father by ringing him just after the abduction.

Three years later, the “Pines” postcard was sent hinting at a victim who was buried in the snow between the pines. It did admittedly say “pass Lake Tahoe areas” which wouldn’t make much sense, but it does seem a kind of curious coincidence. The Pines card was received on Monday March 22nd which meant there was a fair chance it was posted on the Friday March 19th – the exact 3rd anniversary of Ernstein’s murder. So, an abduction and murder, a creepy silent phonecall to the victim’s father and then an anniversary card to the press. All just a coincidence?

You could be right, Zodiac does like to give double meanings. I have camped and looked for gold at Big Pines, but it was not the one down south.
Thanks for bringing this case up and giving the link to Richard Grinell’s site . He has one of the best crime sites!

Give it a go, would be interesting if you could.

Yes, dyslexia is probably my first undiagnosed language.

There you go, It is also worth noting that Norman Ernstein and his wife were involved with the Redlands Bowl which in 1968 staged a production of the Mikado.

Is that definitely the same Shepards Cragle? Seem to be a lot of names on that awards list. Maybe Z’s in there!

Simplicity: Can’t really see any link myself to the Pines card & your suspect’s drawing of a girl.

As far as i can tell it is. About 12 at the time (Same age as Ernstein) and definitely the right location.

Also it could tie into the 13TH Victim Postcard 10/5/70 as this had a Red Cross on it

Shouldn’t be dismissed so fast, mispellings of surnames is common then even more than now.

Yes, dyslexia is probably my first undiagnosed language.

Might be a different person or suppose it could just be a typo? I’ve seen about a dozen different spellings for Z victims in newspaper and police reports of the crimes. T L Stine & Harknell are just the first examples that spring to mind!

True even Graysmith spelled it both ways. But to be sure, perhaps check to see if there was someone else with that other spelling in that area?
