What are some of your favorite bands from this era? Favorite albums? Favorite band to see in concert? Did any of you have a mullet back then?

I was too young to go to concerts back then, but I sure did jam the hell out of a lot of these bands on good ol’ cassette tapes! I grew up in a small town in Iowa, so MTV and radio was the only way to hear new music. I loved what is now known as classic rock, but once we got MTV around ’88 or ’89, I started getting into hair metal. Motley Crue, Skid Row and Bon Jovi were my favorites (until I heard Slayer for the first time). The first Bon Jovi album and the first two Crue albums are still in my top 250. My brother loved G-N-R, so we jammed the Appetite for Destruction album a couple million times. He also liked Def Leppard and Poison, but I never really got into them.

Twisted Sister has always been one of my favorites, but I don’t know if they fall into this category. They had the "glam" look and everything, but their music was a little heavier. Just throwin’ some more names out there – Cinderella, Whitesnake, L.A. Guns, RATT, Winger (She’s only 17… which makes me a pedophile but I’m gonna sing about it anyways), Warrant (I took a leak all over the inside of their tour bus once!), Tesla, Mr. Big, Nelson, Slaughter (not to be confused with the awesome Canadian death metal band)….. And then there were the ones who were not as "glam" and were not as mainstream – Quiet Riot, Accept, Dokken, WASP and Twisted Sister would probably fall into this group.

Ok people… lets get this thread hotter than Lita Ford in the 80’s!

You absolutely HAVE TO include Ozzy Osbourne. "Diary of a Madman" is still one of my favorites ever.

I loved Ozzy back then but can’t stand him now. He had a few great albums and got to work with a lot of great musicians on his albums, but my favorite Ozzy is old Black Sabbath. Tony Iommi is a legend!!

If you have time, check out "Diarrhea of a Madman" which is an album by Dave Brockie. http://youtu.be/kJ4y4nokCiM
Pretty funny stuff and the music is good. Dave was also known as Oderus Urungus, lead singer of the almighty GWAR!!! RIP Dave.

I loved me some Van Halen and Judas Priest back in the day.

I’m guessing someone around here was an Iron Maiden fan.

I was a big fan of 80s hair metal bands, mostly from Los Angeles….GNR, Motley Crue, LaGuns, Faster Pussycat. I also loved Judas Priest, Ratt, and Cinderella.
I grew up in a small town in NJ called Wrightstown which bordered on another small town called Cookstown. Cookstown had a small club called, the Satellite Lounge. All kinds of bands played there from Faster Pussycat to Stryper to Twisted Sister, and Bon Jovi. Classic Rock legends like Bruce Springsteen, Foghat, and Lynyrd Skynard played there too, it was cool hanging out there, and meeting some of the musicians. Found a couple 80’s pics of me below :?

:D

I wonder who. :D

I’m not sure if all of the bands I liked strictly qualified as ‘hair’ metal but they were metal and there was hair and some it happened in the 80’s. Maybe they all do. I’ve forgotten the sub groups that metal/rock was divided into and the criteria for membership.

Anywho. Glad to see WASP mentioned. My first gig. I was 15yrs old and I couldn’t hear properly for weeks afterwards. Rrraaaaarrrrrrr!!!!

Gun’s n’ Roses with Faith No More. That album was historic. It defined my summer the year it was released and was world changing in music terms. As was the artwork. I hand painted the ‘bullet’ logo on my bedroom wall and the ‘cross’ logo in oils onto my canvas school bag.
Here’s the Slane gig. All of it. I’m probably in there somewhere. We were right at the front.

Megadeth. Not strictly hair metal but thrash I suppose might be the genre. They are getting included however. Not just because I’ve seen them and have the ticket but also because of they support, Pantera. You will see why. We got to meet Pantera that day and I got a t-shirt signed. such a groupie.

The Maiden of course. 1990 with Wolfsbane in support. Seen them again in 2011.
Here’s youtube footage of the 1990 gig in the King’s Hall Belfast. I’m probably in there somewhere as well and yes, right at the front … ish.

The ‘Tallica. Including this one because … well I can but also because of the zync(ish) – 30th Oct. Which was also my birthday. Hair, metal and a lot of sweating as you can see by the state of the ticket. 3hrs and no support. Metal heaven.

I will be achieving another ‘tick’ on the gig list next year. The tickets have already been boughten ;). Back to where it all started. Firstly with me listening to this back on my clunky, red personal cassette player on a copied cassette on the roof of our garage during the summer holidays and the gig next year is in the Ulster Hall where I went to my first gig. I’m so happy I could "Squweeeeeeemmmm"

So that’s my gig related history as it pertains to the genre. Time for a guilty pleasure.

Ok since morf was brave I’ll be too. There’s probably more evidence somewhere but this was all I could find. Me with my first guitar and whilst not technically a mullet it was closer to it than what I wanted it to be … at that stage anyway. :D

Terrible quality, but super, super rare, is the band ‘GAK’ playing at the RIP magzaine party in 1990. I have it on bootleg and the sound is better. GAK was comprised of members of GNR, METALLICA, and SKID ROW. They played each other’s songs including Hair of the Dog, You’re Crazy, Whiplash, Piece of me, and For Whom The Bell Tolls.

Something really cool about hearing Slash play lead on Whiplash and For Whom the Bell Tolls, but he butchered both :? Still very cool

My very first concert EVER was this one – 1977 – KISS with a little known opening act called AC/DC:

And if you ask me "damn man, how old are you?" Well, I wasn’t really old enough to go to that concert, but through some miracle and rather permissive parents, a friend and I went anyways.

Oh, and it was f**king AWESOME.

Wow, that must have been a really cool double bill.

A Guy I know was a huge Kiss fan,and he must have had 200 Bootleg kiss Concerts on a shelf on his wall. Pretty awesome stuff.

What’s your favorite Kiss song? Calling Dr Love? Beth? Strutter? Detroit Rock City is mine. Also, kiss with or without the makeup? For me, it ain’t kiss unless they have the makeup on. And AC/DC, what more can you say about them? Just a flat out rock band through and through, they might be the only hard rock band without a single ballad, Balls out non stop rock, whether it was Bon Scott or Brian Johnson in the lead. Hard to choose a favorite, Back in Black, Dirty Deeds, my Favorite is For those about to rock. GNR did a really mean live cover of Whole Lotta Rosie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPLWW390iqo

It was a great show, and as I said, I was a little kid, so it impressed me all the more. I know that my favorite KISS song back then was "God of Thunder" – great bass line – but I always really liked the songs that Peter Criss sang with his raspy voice, "Hard Luck Woman" and "Beth," even though they are both ballads, more or less. Here is a great KISS unplugged with Criss singing "Beth"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaI97Q5K30c

But AC/DC is all good with me as well. I saw them on tour – I was thinking it was the "Money Talks" tour – but I Googled it and it was the Razor’s Edge tour on Nov 20, 1990 at Rupp Arena in Lexington, KY. I really remember that when they played "Money Talks" fake dollar bills with Angus Young on them flew from the ceiling and landed on everyone. I know I caught two of them, and had them for a long time, but they are now long lost.

They are on Wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angus_Bucks

I’m glad Ophion started this thread, it makes me nostalgic and really brings me back. It”s a shame my memory isn’t what it once was, LOL. I forgot half of where I was or what I ever did!
