It’s estimated that about 1 in 100 people are psychopaths. We all know the traits: the pathological lies, the glib charm, the lack of remorse, etc. But I’m racking my brain, trying to remember if I have ever crossed paths with someone whom I would deem a psychopath. Just curious if anyone else has an experience to share where you discovered you were dealing with one. Anyone willing to admit to being one?

Even psychopaths don’t recognize that they are a psychopath because they are psychotic, most ordinary folk believe they are not psychopaths, but they might not recognize they are.

Psychopaths are not psychotic. There might be the odd person who is both, but they’re not synonymous by any means. Also, I doubt that psychopaths have no self awareness about their psychopathy. They know it but they just don’t care. In fact I’d say they revel in it.

No doubt I have met some. Probably worked with a few here and there. For sure on these message boards!!

Recently in one of my classes there was an "Test your Psychotic Traits" test. Pretty interesting results you can view:

…they may be dealing with one or more ersatz Zodiacs–other psychotics eager to get into the act, or perhaps even other murderers eager to lay their crimes at the real Zodiac’s doorstep. L.A. Times, 1969

I’m a failure: I MAY be SOMEWHAT psychopathic. Incidentally, "psychopath" was upgraded to "sociopath" eons ago.

I’m a bit afraid I will become a serial killer because I have a lot in common with them. I’m from the midwest, I’m a bit quiet, and… I like to kill people!!!

A few minutes ago on a toilet not very far, far away….

You always make me laugh. :D

I advised the class to please inform me if anyone got 100% I’ll steer clear…

The thing about psychopaths is that they can be quite clever not letting one know they actually are a psychopath. I always get a kick out of some of the psychological tests some people are required to take. A TRUE psychopath would probably pass it without a hitch! A sociopath would probably be another story.

On a side note (via the link to the test results), I hope any psychopath chooses to not have pets at all…it’s rarely a good outcome.

I know somebody that I actually believe could be the kind of serial killer that dumps dead hookers in various places, not a sophisticated one like Z. He really, really gives me the creeps, and if I read tomorrow he was a serial killer, I would not be surprised.

I also worked with a Guy who was a pathological liar,I mean GRAND LIES,like he used to be a WWF Wrestler, and was supposed to wrestle guys like Hulk Hogan for the championship, and when you caught him in a lie, and confronted him, he would spin another lie. One time, a 98 year old man-yeah,98, drove up to my work(yes drove), came inside, and went to a back office to take care of some issue, When he left, he walked out to his car. We didn’t pay much attention but noticed a few minutes later, that his car was still there but he was no place to be found. The liar I worked with, looked out the window and calmly said,"is that Guy supposed to be lying on the ground?" with no emotion. The old man had fallen down, and the rest of us ran out to help him while the Liar sat down at his desk and had some coffee. Based on that kind of stuff, maybe he was a psychopath

Yeah, Morf, I would have the same hunch, especially seeing how he reacted to the man on the ground. Talk about your red flags. But I think tahoe was right that a lot of psychopaths are probably very adept at hiding it. They learn to act normal in social situations, even in personal and intimate relationships. It’s kind of amazing how many spouses of serial killers are so stunned to learn their loved ones are evil.

I remember as a kid this older guy a few streets down doing horrific things to a litter of kittens. I shutter to think what he’s doing now.

It’s hard to imagine what it’s like to completely lack empathy, but what’s even more baffling is trying to understand why someone would kill random strangers. I know that the vast majority of psychopaths do not become serial killers, but for the ones that do, I’d love to have some insight as to why. I get being misanthropic. I’m a bit of one myself. But it’s abstract, just a feeling in general that most people are a-holes. I even get killing people who’ve done you wrong. I’m almost certain I would kill too, if someone did something like abuse my child or something like that, but it’s the transference part that I can’t seem to grasp. Maybe it’s good that I don’t get it.

So I got a 24, and the cat as well.

Makes me feel like I need to toughen up — it probably takes a psychopath to catch one!
