This may be very helpful to some readers here. It made a BIG difference for me!

So, I have been having internet speed issues on-and-off for a long while now. I even swapped out cable modems with a new one, which helped for a while, but then the problem came back. My cable modem and wireless router were in the basement, side-by-side.

Not wanting to swap out modems AGAIN, I searched Google, and came across a post that said that if the modem and router are too close together, RF and EMI electrical interference could cause problems. I thought this was B.S., but hey, easy enough to do, why not try…

WOW!!! HUGE DIFFERENCE!!! Sorry for shouting, but this completely fixed my issue, and my speeds are now faster than they have ever been.

It’s real, it’s true, and I didn’t even think it would work, but it did. Amazingly well! So, word of advice:

Keep your wireless router as far from your cable modem as your wiring will allow!!

It really can make a difference. I even put them close again, and the problem returned. But FAR apart it works much better. This is real.

Quite honestly, this has made me giddy happy. I’ve been having this problem for ages, and this totally fixed it.

I used to have a similar problem.. I had one sitting on top of the other.. The router dropped out every other day and I had to reset.. Pain in the backside.. My company’s Internet guru got me to move them apart.. Can’t recall the last time I reset.. Maybe that’s the same deal.. Speed the same I think?

Yeah, this is one of those crazy things that even I thought would never work, but it absolutely did. I got even better speeds. I posted in the hope that it will help someone, and I bet that it will, too. It works.

there’s a lot of rf noise coming out of cable modems because they’re usually not shielded very well. it doesn’t surprise me that you’d have issues if you’re using 2.4GHz wifi. i’d recommend a radius of three feet between the two and, as a side note, i’d also recommend a radius of at least ten feet between your wifi device and your access point. i’ve seen many issues where people put their access point under a couch or bed or on a desk and then are surprised that they have bad coverage when they’re near it. there is acknowledgement timing built into the communications mechanism of these devices and the timing can get thrown off if you’re too close to it (basically your phone/laptop is responding before the ap thinks you should have received information).
