‘I am the ZODIAC and I am in control of all things. I am going to tell you a secret. I like friction tape. I like to have it around in case I need to truss someone up in a hurry….I have my real name on a small metallic tape. You see, while you have it in your possession, I want you to know it belongs to me and you think I may have left it accidentally. I am athletic. It could be swim fins, or a piece of scuba gear. But maybe you play chess with me. I have several cheap sets in closets all over. I have my name on the bottom of the lid with the scotch tape….My tape is waiting for me all over California. Do you know me? I am the ZODIAC and I am in control.’

1. Only three months after the first Herb-Caen-letter, Z again uses the term ‘in control of all things’ (‘I am now in control of all things’), this time not only at the end but also at the beginning of his letter.

2. Like in the Bus-bomb-letter (11/9/69) as well as the Button-letter (6/26/70) as well as the ‘some of them fought it was horrible’ (10/5/70) as well as the Manor Township letter (1/5/77) Zodiac uses the term that he has to ‘tell you‘ something.

3. He further teases with ‘telling his name’ and, also quite Z typical, often refers to himself (‘I’) signalling him being sort of a egomaniac.

Now this letter is more interesting as it seems to be. Z clearly gives a hint on his person. Let’s have a look at it again:

‘I like friction tape. I have my real name on a small metallic tape. You see, while you have it in your possession, I want you to know it belongs to me and you think I may have left it accidentally. I am athletic. It could be swim fins, or a piece of scuba gear. But maybe you play chess with me. I have several cheap sets in closets all over. I have my name on the bottom of the lid with the scotch tape….My tape is waiting for me all over California.’

The term ‘scotch tape’ caught my attraction..then I found this one:

http://www.fuzzymemories.tv/index.php?c=405

So there was an excellent commercial in 1978, the year of this letter, about ‘scotch tape’. He has his name on the bottom of the lid with the scotch tape? His tape is waiting for him all over California? This could mean that it was sold everywhere?

His name on the bottom of the lid of the Scotch tape…taking this seriously, in connection with this lid I’d say that Zodiac’s first name is PAUL:

The letter was sent from Los Angeles (!). It was sent from LA not to the LA Times, but – to the SF Chronicle, San Francisco. So obviously the author had a preference for the SF Chronicle, although staying in LA at the time of sending it.

I am not certain that this letter even exists, except in the mind of Graysmith. Are there any images of the letter or the envelope?

I’ve never seen any. (Or even a mention in the FBI reports, or anything at all beyond the word of RG)

AFAIK the only source for this one is Graysmith (Zodiac Unmasked).

And he doesn’t provide a picture/photocopy of the letter – he merely quotes it.

Several of the clues offered by the author (of the letter) point very clearly in Allen’s direction.

It’s fishy for my money.

Mr Lowe, There is an active ongoing investigation. My post should speak for itself, respectfully.. I really wish I could tell you all more but until this cat is arrested or dies.. I have to stop short of Identifying him.. One reason this asshole could leave the the country. This is a distinct possibility. There is a strong possibility he is on this site. I know you will probably say oh just another tease crackpot as I have watched the reactions here. I do not want to screw up any possible LE case on this guy. But here is some good news..You guys don’t know how close some of your post are. Some actually are confirming to me and LE. As for my suspect, Two post really knocked it out of the park. There is some good work on here.

Regards,
TGOZ

Yes, please refrain from using any real names of living suspects.

I am surprised, if you feel you are so close, you are here discussing this at all. Might be a good idea to wait as I don’t see what purpose it would serve and might ultimately harm any active investigation.

was Allen’s first name Paul?

If you mean Paul Allen, the footballer – then yes!

If you mean our old friend, ALA – then…no.

I’m talking about the scuba diving hint, for instance – which seemingly points not too subtly at Allen.

The problem with the letter remains the same: We don’t have a copy of it and it never seems to have been mentioned anywhere before Graysmith brought it up (again, without providing a photo of it) in his book. Surely you agree this is problematic?

Norse I think it needs to be included.. It just seems to fit it’s got the vibe of "Z". And the clues suit me! On the flip side why would the original not be shown?
Cheers

Until proven otherwise, I am prone to believe that this letter does not really exist. It was "found" by Graysmith (who apparently has no image of it), it points rather directly at his POI, and it is not mentioned AT ALL in any of the FBI or Police reports.

Correct me if I am wrong. I tend toward the skeptical side of things, and taking the word of one man with some well-known problems with honesty just isn’t in me.

I will just ask directly – has ANYONE other than RG seen this letter, or any proof that it exists? Because otherwise, no it does not need to be "included." Fake evidence is far worse than no evidence, IMO.

It sucks, because it’s typewritten supposedly, so even if it really does exists, anybody could have typed it. No handwriting clues.
